Why NY’s Budget Problems are Relevant

New York likes to consider itself a capital of culture and one of the nation’s shining lights. Unfortunately, now it’s becoming the capital of a new kind of culture – the deadbeat culture.
New York can’t pay its bills.
The state legislature, facing a statewide shutdown of critical public services, has been attempting to respond to budgetary pressures. The budget must be balanced, but no one wants to be the bogeyman who gives cherished programs – or trash collection – the final cut. Instead, the state legislature spent 11 weeks on emergency budget extensions, working their way up to a still-not-balanced budget partially vetoed by the governor’s office.
The rest of the country better pay attention.
New York isn’t the only state facing a major budget crisis. Shutdowns of public services have been popping up throughout the country. Rest stops shut down here. Library hours reduced there. Welfare cutbacks, food bank reductions, and quiet, but firm, denials of local services residents have always assumed would be available are prevalent. While there’s not panic in the streets yet, there will be.
Though the federal budget issues make the front pages, state and local service denials actually present bigger problems for the average citizen. Americans rely on their local police forces, local schools, and local government offices to ensure the smooth passage of one day into the next. A failure in the daily touch points – especially over a prolonged period – causes civic disarray.
Much of this disarray is being swept under the carpet. In the eyes of the media, it’s just not that newsworthy compared to other major disasters. However, the little cracks in the foundations of the system are definitely present.
It may not be the big disaster – a war, oil spill, or stock market plunge – that ultimately unravels the daily institutions that surround us. Inch by inch, service by service, local shutdowns push Americans out of the mainstream support grid and back out on their own. Those who see it coming can be prepared, or at least make the smartest choices possible given their personal situations. Those who are distracted by the “big news” will miss the rug being pulled out from under their feet.
For this reason, despite all the name calling and political pandering going on in New York, the events there are worth watching. Even in a race for the gutter, New York is a cultural leader – one other states and cities would be wise not to emulate.

been away on an assignment, so just popping in here when I have a minute or two. read some disturbing stuff today about New York City and looks like the plan for a Mosque a couple blocks from the world trade center is approved. I am saddened and disgusted but I really don’t think the American people wil rise up. Out of 22 million people in NY state and 8 million just in NYC alone, I was surprised to see how many people didn’t think it was a big deal although I was even more surprised that this panel wasn’t listening to the people, and rejecting the proposal. NY just wants the 100 million dollars-but in the long run, becuase of radicals and separation of church and state-it will be far more costly to the american people and our way of life….and I know when the muslims talk to the US they say one thing and then they speak to their coutries in their language and say another…found an interesting article.

also heard obama was born in indonesia but later went to a school that was for christians, but becuase of his father’s faith, he was separated and taught the muslim religion…..

Hello Hujowi,your right we will need to also speak Chinese ha ha,funny sad but true,my reasoning behind this is an article I read”which I believe to be true” said that the United States Environmental Agency [EA]is ”confiscating ”public and private lands to use as collateral to gurantee ”loans from China”..When the EA Confiscates land they put a ban on any water drilling,oil exploration,land development,or commercial interprise venture ..In other words a Total shutdown on any activity,just like a Bank that accepts land as collateral for on a loan..The western United States from Oklahoma toward Canada and then to California is affected..Huge amounts of land is confiscated by the Millions of acres sinceNixon went to China and started insanr Trade agreements with China..How can we compete with slave labor on products made?We can’t thats why our trade deficits is so huge no only with China but everyone else we trade with..If we ever start to default on our loans payments to China the USA will have only ONE OPTION and thats to release land to the Chinese or any other country to satisfy our debt..Some of our National Parks are already under the ”so called protection” if I’m not mistaken > Nato..>National Alliance of Treaty Organizations…If anyone can prove me wrong please correct me..God Bless..
i just to feel very sorry for the people in new york and especially new jerk city, but over time and the latest events…i am only disgusted with them all! it is a disgrace to build that mosque and comrade obama is in the closet paving the way…it has been a life long dream of his and his football player looking getto broad.they are both such low lifes. one of the other conservative folks,i think it was newsmax,not sure,but anyway they investigating who was funding this mosque.well,the whole thing has been very hush hush,but it was traced that one of the over-see-ers is in the iranian ministry and some of the money has come from the saudi’s and the palestinians.our service men and women are shedding their blood everyday…they are being sent home
