The Mosque at Ground Zero: A Call for Reasonableness

This site is dedicated to offering solutions for survival in the event of a natural catastrophe, a man-made catastrophe, political unrest or a terrorist attack. Yet somewhere in the midst of preparing for such events, we cannot afford to divorce ourselves from the political realities around us. Our Founding Fathers did not shrink back from being engaged in the political landscape of their time, and we should not do so either.

We are in the ninth year post-9/11. The hole in the world at Ground Zero still echoes with the reverberations from the crashing Twin Towers and the bodies of those that plummeted to their deaths rather than face the fiery inferno behind them. A Pennsylvania field still bears the scars of a plane that was heroically brought down by passengers unwilling to allow themselves to be used as the instrument of death for an unknown target.

Now what began as a move to restore a building much in need of reclamation near Ground Zero in Manhattan has become a symbol of all that is right and perhaps wrong with the current political and societal atmosphere of America. At one time called a mosque, then reinvented as a cultural center, now once again a mosque, the building of Cordoba House just two blocks from the Ground Zero Memorial begs a number of questions. And everyone, it seems, now feels compelled to offer answers. Mayor Bloomberg stands solidly behind the planners of the mosque while New York’s Governor Patterson has sought to mediate placement of the mosque to a less offensive location. Now President Obama has vacillated on his stand, further stirring the pot of opinion.

So what should we think of a mosque planned within sight of the final resting place of thousands intentionally murdered in the name of Allah? In truth, there are radical voices on both sides of the issue. Some on the left see the mosque as a shining example of American tolerance and fair-mindedness, while others on the right have made it their rallying cry for the coming November elections. Both are making a serious mistake. One mistakes tolerance for reasonableness, and the other needs to put a little more faith in America’s common sense.

The main argument for the location of the mosque is it will stand as a testament to America’s commitment to religious freedom and equality of all people. Wouldn’t it be nice if the people planning the Cordoba House Mosque believed in the same principles?  A little history lesson is in order at this point. The name, Cordoba, refers to the city of Cordoba in Spain where Islam reached its peak of rule on the European continent.  The Imam of the proposed mosque in Manhattan, Faisal Abdul Rauf, has often referred to the supposed religious freedom of that period in Muslim history as inspiration for the name of the new place of worship.  The problem with such rhetoric is the tolerance of Cordoba is a myth. Christian and Jews alike suffered tremendous persecution through the rule of Sharia law. All that kept most alive were oppressive protection taxes demanded by their Muslim rulers. Resistance was more often than not met with the sword.  Considering the extended history of the name chosen for the mosque and Faisal Abdul Rauf’s recent history of direct ties to Hamas and Saudi Arabia, one can hardly consider his call for tolerance seriously.

What is really being missed in this argument is reasonableness. If friends of Timothy McVeigh petitioned to build a place of worship across the street from the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, you can be sure city officials would promptly find a way to squelch that endeavor. When Catholic nuns planned a site hear Auschwitz, they quickly changed their plans when they realized it was offensive to the Jews and their families that suffered there. In that case, the nuns’ intention was purely one of reconciliation and peace. Even so, they were reasonable and moved elsewhere.

To those looking to make political capitol out of this controversy, a word of caution is in order. For many of us in the United States, September 11, 2001 is permanently underlined in red in our memories. I doubt many recall that day marked the United Nations International Day of Peace, a phrase about as meaningful as Congressional ethics. But I dare say the vast majority of Americans do remember realizing the world as they understood it changed as the black smoke of burning jet fuel overcame the brilliant blue sky above New York City. Radical Islam had struck at the heart of two of our greatest symbols, the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and was it not for the bravery of men like Todd Beamer and others on United Airlines Flight 93, it would have been a third, the Capitol.

Nearly three thousand souls were fodder that day for the hatred of a wing of Islam bent on dragging the rest of the world, at gunpoint, along with it toward its supposed Paradise. But that was only the beginning. Thousands of young men and women have given their lives at the bequest of two Commanders’ in Chief to continue the fight against the groups that financed, trained, and commissioned the initial terrorists that threw us into the current struggle in which we find ourselves. One couple, whose names matter not because they represent so many more, remembers September 11th all too well. It was the day their youngest son, in the Army less than a year, embarked on a journey that would eventually land him as deep in the conflict as one could get. Since that time, they have prayed as he left for Iraq and rejoiced on his return with a Bronze Star.  Prayed again as he left small children and a wife to head to Afghanistan, surviving countless missions on the Pakistan border. Now their joy on his safe return home fades as he prepares for his third, and probably most dangerous, tour of all.  And to this point, their story is one of the better. Their son, their daughter-in-law’s husband, and their grandchildren’s father, has come home relatively unscathed, with his final chapter yet to be written.  But for too many others, the book has sadly already been closed.

Perhaps the politicians would do best on all sides to stay out of this one and just let the people speak. Maybe some have forgotten what Ground Zero represents but most of us have not. To those who say the placement of a mosque in New York City is a local issue, there are many mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends, and neighbors that would respectfully disagree.

This is the SECOND Hallowed Ground Mosque. The first is being built in a field in Shanksville, PA, complete with minaret. Where was the outrage when the Flight 93 Open-air Mosque was concieved? Where wa the outrage when the committee stole land from the PA family for this mosque? Their family farmed that ground for over 200 years and now it is part of a mosque. I say…stop the Flight 93 Mosque and the Cordoba Initiative at GZ and stop appeasing the islamists bent on the destruction of the United States of America.

If we don’t realize the very real threat that Islam represents, then we’re going to go the way of Europe. Until the moderates denounce Hamas, Hezbollah, the destruction of Israel, and the tenets of Islam that call for jihad and Sharia, then you cannot trust them. Even their book, the Koran, advocates lying until they gain the upper hand. If that is their faith, how can you trust them fully? Only through their actions, and their actions thus far prove to me that they are untrustworthy and suspect. If they were truly respectful of the tragedy of 9/11, they would move the thing. (And why are we, the taxpayers, paying this imam to gad about the world???)

  3. rdnkrfnk says:

i dont understand why we are paying for this imam to go off round the world nor why we are paying for the mosque to be built everywhere they have blown up stuff or won a battle they put up one of these mosques as a symbol of their victory when are we as americans gonna quit this politically correct crap and just for once tell people no or its none of your buisness anything just stand up for ourselves and start calling things what they really are not what others would like to hear in my .02 is if you attempt to or you blow somthing up you are a terrorist the one im thinking and it doesnt always work out some slip by is we should close all our borders and have an immagration policy more like canada has to become a citizen there you have to bring a certain skill to the table along with our policies on immigration i dont dislike immigrants legal ones are fine i dont hate anyone long as they work and i aint gotta support them and if youve got some special interest group then find like minded folks to donate to your program but i dont want my tax dollars supporting your special interest if you cant raise the money to save your special interest then i guess you tried and it died

    • Ben from Texas says:

I’ll tell you why RDNKRFNK why we’re paying for the iman to fly around the world raising money for the Mosque,it because we have a Communist Muslim for a president, that hates America and wants our downfall so he can install a Socialist communist government..Search ”Cloward and Piven Plan”..and see how he’s doing it to this country now..Cloward and Piven is a man and woman that went to Columbia U with Obama and they made up a communist plan to destroy America and install a socialists-communist government..George Soros is the Demon that helped finance, educate, groom Obama for this Presidency..

      • mississippigirl says:

If you want to know all the connections between the socialists and this president, you need to get the movie “Agenda: Grinding America Down by Curtis Bowers. Go to http://www.agendadocumentary.com to see a trailer and order the movie. It’s unreal….

      • Ben from Texas says:

Correction,Cloward and Piven wrote up the plan in the 60′s at Columbia U the same college Obama went to,,Obama is following this plan to flood the system with trillions of dollars of spending to collapse our economy so Obama’s Socialist-Communist Demonicratic Party can seize and hold power by giving away money and benefits to the illegals and poor to dumb to get a good education and to lazy to work for what they need..The poor want the Demoncratic party to win because they won’t have to work to support themselves ..Its simply a redistribution of wealth, take it from the middle class and give it to the illegals so they can take their fake ss numbers and fake drivers licence and vote for the democrats.

  4. willp4444 says:

Should we not try to find out what REALLY happened before we blame anyone?

    • draper says:

We do know what really happened. It is the conspiracy nuts, perhaps you are even one of them, that must find out the real truth. It was terrorists hell bent on killing innocent Americans, plain and simple. Please just shut up already..

      • willp4444 says:

The only conspiracy offered was one lie presented to us by the US government. There are over 1200 credentials-verified architects and engineers at ae911truth dot org that say the official conspiracy theory is not supported by the evidence and even NIST has no explanation why WTC building 7 fell. And they do all this without name calling. We absolutely DO NOT know what happened on 9/11

  5. Aylana says:

Regardless when a mosque is built near a sacred site it symbolized that they have conquered the land they bombed and that mosque is a symbol for that. If they cannot convert you they will enslave or kill you. So for those who really don’t care about their future then you deserve what is coming to you and maybe while your at it you should allow the japanese to build a monument near pearl harbor and the nazis to put a their monument near the concentration camps

  6. Ben from Texas says:

HOW I BUILT MY LOG HOME,,Move to the country buy at least 5 acre of land with timber,Pick a piece of land that has a rise on it if possible for your home for rain runoff, cut the trees down in Jan or Feb when the sap is up in the logs ,get the logs off the ground on ”treated so termites will not get in your logs while they are drying land scapping timbers..Dump a load or two of red clay for a foundation ,spread out then pack by driving a car or truck on it or tractor, then pour a concrete slab with a 8 inch beam along the edge for your house with a recessed lip all around the slab 2inches deep by 12 inches wide to set the logs on .In 4 or 5 months the logs should be dry enough to scrape the bark off, then spray diesel or wood preservative on them,Put the larger diameter logs on the bottom working your way to the top, saddle notch the logs on the corners till they start touching so there’s a small crack between the logs along the walls as you raise your walls, make your walls 7 feet tall,, and nail the corners together with 10 inch spikes, fill the cracks between the logs with one quarter inch square galvanize mesh wire and nail strips of it in- between the logs at the top and bottom with needle nose plyers and 2 inch roofing nails, then fill the cracks inside and out with a mixture of sand mix and concrete,75% sandmix 25% pure portland concrete, don’t put in more cement than you can smooth out before it gets hard ,,when you get the walls 7 feet tall ,level the top of all 4 walls with 2by 12′s or 4 by 4′s all the way around the 4 sides, and put on a commercial roof with rafters, plywood and shingles or a metal roof ”which i advise”and with a 3 or 4 FOOT OVER HANG over the logs to protect the bottom logs from water splash back, this is done so your bottom logs will not rot, bottom logs should be cedar or oak or some other rot resistant wood, after your walls are up frame your door ways and windows on both sides of the wall with 2 by 4 ‘s and then cut out the area with a chain saw, then frame with 2 by 12 treated wood and then hang doors and windows..Remove or burn the stumps you cut for your cabin and start a garden,.clear it ,grow a garden..Fall peas put nitrogen back in your soil for your next springs planting ,also you can kill deer when they come to eat your fall peas,Questions? sagary@netscape.com

  7. chewbacca says:

How can people NOT see—that when a (supposed holy book, tells it’s followers) to KILL– ANY and ALL persons (NOT willing to conform) to that specific religion–It’s (NOT a religion)–it’s a CULT pure & simple… The bible even tells us when and how it all came about-and to be on the look out (for it) to apear. Many Muslims are nice good people– that have been (suckered into it’s web) by other Muslims. They too are on the list (to be murdered) by the radical ones. Once the radical Muslims figure out how to get rid of the (Moderate Muslims) they will do it… Radical Muslims want to bring about (the end) by destroying- the entire world. How does one combat against that kind of cult?

  8. chewbacca says:

Don’t forget–that there are ((NO Christian churches)) in ANY middle-eastern Muslim nation-because it’s AGAINST the law there! If caught being a Christian there- you will be BE-HEADED. Where is their tolerance to us? No where! So for those of you-that are the (snot nosed whiney assed liberals) on the Right or the Left who are always crying “let them do what they want here they aren’t hurting anyone.”

Being politically correct like that—will get you a cup of coffee and YOUR bloody head in a jar. Get with the program-IDIOTS. You too will be (killed) once THEY gain power here… So (while we STILL have control) of our OWN government—Let’s fix this… Let’s make it to where these nut jobs (who are in power-HELPING these radicals) to take us over–make it NOT (be easy) for them! There are tens of millions of us that HAVE (served) this country proudly- and WE WILL continue to DO SO- for many generations to come… God Bless,

  9. njord says:

Screw the protests, here’s how to stop the mosque:

Plant a Pig (In Spain . . . at Sevilla (Seville)

Some local people found a way to stop the construction of another mosque in their town ..
They buried a Pig on the site, making sure this would be known by the local press..
The Islamic rules forbidding to erect a Mosque on “Pig soiled ground”.
The Muslims had to cancel the project ..this land was sold to them by government officials..
No protests were needed by the local people … and It worked !

    • Deadeye says:

WOW, didn’t know about this……it not only makes sense, it’s damned cheap and quite funny. Someone get a pig and a shovel, I’d do it myself if I were in better health and lived there. Gotta find someone that’s willing.

  10. ecclesiaoflbt says:

Bravo, njord, it’s the KISS principle in action and as deadly as a bullet. Someone out there PLANT A PIG!
