The Conspirator, directed by Robert Redford, is the kind of movie that is probably destined to do better over time than at the box office. Less than two minutes at the beginning of the film contain anything close to the usual wide-screen fair of exploding objects or dismembered bodies. Instead, it deals with the less

If you are among those who have chosen an off-the-grid lifestyle, you know that growing and raising your own food is one of the best ways to maintain independent living. Taking care of farm animals requires a lot of work and is a big responsibility, however, and that responsibility can grow significantly if you are facing a natural disaster situation or other kind of emergency. No one who is raising cattle, pigs, chickens, sheep, or any other type of farm animal can afford to be caught unprepared when calamity strikes. Because we live in dangerous

In 1818, a salt well suddenly began to fill with oil, making it the first well to produce crude oil in America. People had known about such oil seeps in western Pennsylvania for centuries. For years European settlers had been skimming the oil from the seeps and using the petroleum as a source of lamp fuel and machinery lubrication. The Seneca Indians and Revolutionary soldiers serving under General Benjamin

Sustainability is a central theme in off-the-grid living, and as technology advances, it becomes easier to access the sustainability one desires at a cost that’s relatively inexpensive to prior years. However, this proliferation of access to energy and value in acquisition also brings looseness in the mindset of those who participate in it. Suddenly, those

LONDON – As youth riots continue to erupt throughout parts of Great Britain, several leading British bankers have complained that rioters have violated national bailout and plunder etiquette as laid down by the banking industry. “These protests are utterly unseemly and completely lacking in irony,” said Duncan Greenwood, chief executive of Lloyds Banking Group. “These

Many U.S. states have given up waiting on the federal government to fully support achieving energy independence in the country. Among many locally-sponsored programs, Hawaii and Iowa have taken large steps toward using alternative energy to provide power for their citizens. Hawaii in particular has sought to increase production of electricity generated by solar power. Hawaiian Electric Company (HEC) has reached a milestone of providing 20 megawatts of electricity through solar power generation. The most prominent location for solar power is on the island of Oahu, where HEC operates a solar array and approximately 4,000

Hot water is one of the main “offenders” found each month hidden in your gas or electric bill. In fact, for most households, hot water is the second largest chunk of overall energy use. And it’s relatively easy to see why. Hot water is a luxury many of us aren’t willing give up, no matter

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. (Matthew 23:23-24 NIV) As the editor of Off the Grid News, I get some pretty interesting emails in my inbox. I receive letters with questions pertaining to every subject one can think about. I receive emails that just

Last week we helped you get started in writing your business plan. Today we’re going to cover what could be the most crucial part of that business plan – your marketing plan. Your marketing plan is not just important; it’s completely and utterly 100% necessary. An old Chinese proverb says: “To open a shop is easy.
