Vice President Joe Biden is well-known for his off-the-cuff remarks and outright gaffes, so many assumed it was more of the same when he made a recent comment about not “second-guessing” China’s one-child policy. A little research however reveals that Biden was not speaking out of school about this subject. Steven Mosher, president of the Population Research Institute (PRI), had numerous discussions with then-Senator Biden on the topic of population control when they were working to establish Free Radio Asia in the early 1990s. The discussions between Mosher and Biden occurred when Mosher was serving

Maybe you are too young to remember, but there was once a time when packaged seed was rare. In those days, next year’s harvest depended on successfully harvesting seed from this year’s vegetables. Saving seed may not be as necessary today, but it does allow you to continue growing heirloom vegetables that seed companies no longer carry. While the process for saving seed is easy, you do need to start earlier than you think. So let’s start with the basics: Gather seed only from open-pollinated plants, not hybrids. Hybrids are genetically engineered, not the way

If you have a little bit of land and a love for horses, you can add some real live horsepower to your homestead. Horses are often allowed in smaller suburbs and even some upscale areas because they are not classified as “livestock” but are considered a pet. If you think your area may allow horses, a simple call to your local zoning office will give you the low down on if you can have them, how many you can have and if there is an acreage limitation. Just about any horse can add value to

There is no single pill or remedy that cures acid reflux (also called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD). It is a condition that develops with time and lifestyle choices. The most recognized symptom of acid reflux is a persistent burning sensation in the mid-chest region and/or throat. This is brought on when stomach acid churns, coming up the esophagus and pushing through lower esophageal sphincter. Sometimes it comes up as far as the back of the throat and mouth. Just as there is no single cure for this condition, there is also no single cause.

As fall is now upon us, summer gardens will quickly be coming to an end. Don’t let any unripe tomatoes go to waste though—if you still have a few green tomatoes when the first frost arrives, pick them and serve them up fried or in a green tomato pie!

What kind of book do you think a woman named Lisa Renee Sorbo Walsh Felsh Heidenstecker Mikitarian would write? If you said an eclectic mix of short stories featuring women in various seasons of their life, you would have a beginning understanding of this wonderful author’s debut book, Her Safari. I know… you’re thinking “This is an off-grid news site. This is where we go to learn how to be self-sufficient. Why are we showcasing this book here?” I have known Lisa for several years now. She has a heart as big as a house,

Born in 1754, Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley was the daughter of a New Jersey dairy farmer. Apparently dairy farming wasn’t for her, because young Mary became a domestic servant at the age of thirteen and married the same year. Her husband, William Hays, caught Revolutionary fever and later enlisted as a gunner in the Pennsylvania Artillery. During the Philadelphia Campaign (1777-1778), Mary soon joined her husband as a camp follower and both wintered with George Washington at Valley Forge.

One of the most primordial human reflexes is the fight or flight reaction. It is our own natural alarm system. Let’s say you come face to face with a hungry grizzly bear in your campsite. First you hear that huffing/grunting sound that says he’s smelled you. Then he comes into view, stands there looking directly
