Should We Obey Man Or God?

27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, 28 saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!” 29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men. Acts 5:27-29

In the current political climate of the United States, adherence to God’s word and teaching is looked down upon more each day. We have to remember who we serve and act accordingly no matter the consequences.

The high priest and the Sadducees had thrown the apostles in prison for preaching and performing miracles in Jesus name after they had warned them not to. In the middle of the night, the angel of the Lord came and released them from the prison and told them to go preach in the temple.

When the high priest sent guards to fetch them the next morning they found the prison secure, but the apostles were missing. The word came that they were in the temple preaching, so the captain of the guard brought them before the council. Peter in one of his bold statements tells them that they will obey God instead of man.

We are being asked on many fronts to obey man instead of God. There are many lines being drawn in the sand and our faith is being tested. Just how far are you willing to follow your faith? Do you leave it at church on Sunday or do you live it out the rest of the week?

We must remember to render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, but under no circumstances render unto Caesar what is God’s.

  1. First thank you for the insights gleaned from scripture that beckons us to follow “The Way, The Truth and the Life”, Jesus Christ.
The scripture translation of passage of Acts 5:27-29 use of the word “ought” in my history carries an impression of gray or indifference etc. But I like the other versions that mostly use the word “must”, But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
In our day as followers of the One and only Way we must be courageous, strong and firm in our beliefs and an action as the hero’s of the faith have displayed in their lives and is recorded in the Word of God. (Heb 12:1)
Again, thanks for your web site and the information and spiritual encouragement that it provides.
