Recognizing Happiness

“Happiness is not a matter of good fortune or worldly possessions. It’s a mental attitude. It comes from appreciating what we have, instead of being miserable about what we don’t have. It’s so simple—yet so hard for the human mind to comprehend.”

E. R. Stettinius, Anonymous

What makes you happy? Is it the sound of children playing? Having your family together under one roof? The colors of the fall swirling around you? Happiness means different things to different people, but it is important focus on those things that make you happy.

It is extremely easy to worry about what you haven’t done, particularly in the prepper mindset. There is always one more row we can plant, one more thing we can learn, and one more element we can prepare. But, we have to be careful we do not become miserable worrying about those things we have not accomplished or do not have yet. We simply have to learn to be happy with the things we do have.

The next time you feel yourself slipping into frustration, worry, and unhappiness about things you do not have, take a step back. Close your eyes and focus on the blessings in your life. For example, you may not be able to afford a backup generator, but you know how to survive with no electricity and that is more than many other people can say.

Happiness is a choice. It is a mental mindset that only you control. Choosing to be happy in every situation will eventually be something you do not even have to focus on to accomplish and you will be amazed as it consistently spills over towards those around you.
