Searching For Help

“I asked for help which is the hardest thing in the world.”

                –Marcia Wallace

I am one of the world’s worst about asking for help. Part of it is a control thing. I like to know things are going the way they should. Part of it is simply the fact that I just like to do things myself. I like to take care of others and much of the time that means I may struggle to accomplish something so they do not have to worry.

Recently, I was reminded of the importance of actually asking for help. When my daughter and I were visiting her school one day, we were discussing her daily struggle not to talk. She told me in a very sad voice, “Mommy, God didn’t help me today.” We talked about free will and the ability He has blessed us with to make choices. Finally, I realized something extremely important and asked her if she actually sought His help. Did she ask for Him to help her during the day? She looked at me as if I had two heads telling me she didn’t need to ask His help because He was God and He was supposed to know she needed help. The idea she would need to actually ask Him was a completely foreign concept.

But, that is what God wants from His children; that is His purpose in hoping we seek a relationship with Him. God made a choice when He created man. He easily could have formed us in His image and then forced us to worship Him. Instead, He made the decision to grace us with free well, with the ability to choose to worship Him, seek Him, and love Him. From the moment Adam and Eve were removed from the Garden of Eden, God knew we would face difficult times. Trials and temptations would constantly surround us. Because of this, He offered us a way out. He offered us His help; we only have to ask Him for it.
