Legislator’s ‘Piers Morgan Bill’ Would Abolish Gun Licenses (Yes, You Read That Right)

Piers Morgan’s almost legendary promotion of gun control may have backfired.

An Oklahoma state senator has named a bill to abolish gun licenses in his state the “Piers Morgan Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms without Infringement Act.”

Senate Bill 1473 would give citizens the right to carry loaded or unloaded guns in most places in Oklahoma without a license. The bill’s sponsor, State Senator Nathan Dahm (R-Broken Arrow), intended it as a rebuke to the controversial CNN interviewer and former British tabloid journalist.

“Senate Bill 1473 simply says Oklahomans can carry firearms in all the places currently allowed by law, but they will no longer be required to obtain a license to do so,” Dahm noted in a press release. The bill has been introduced in the Oklahoma Senate.

Piers Morgan Issues Challenge via Twitter

Predictability, Morgan is using the challenge to promote himself and his interview program on CNN. The host used Twitter to challenge Dahm to a debate. He wrote:

“Hi Senator @NathanDahm – come on my show and debate your new ‘Piers Morgan Act’.” Morgan wrote. “If you have the guts.”

Dahm apparently has the guts.

“Received the email invite from your producer,” Dahm responded. “Working out the details but it looks like Monday evening. We can discuss it then.”

Morgan responded:

“It’s on.”

If these Tweets are accurate Dahm and Morgan will face off on Piers Morgan Live on Monday night, January 27. There is no mention of the interview on the CNN website yet. Piers Morgan Live runs on CNN at 9 p.m. Eastern and Pacific and 8 p.m. Central and Mountain Time.

The proposed bill reads:

“A person shall be permitted to carry loaded and unloaded shotguns, rifles and pistols, open and not concealed and without a handgun license as authorized by the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act.”

The Oklahoma Self-Defense Act is the state’s open carry law.

The concept behind the Oklahoma bill is not a new one. Supporters call it “constitutional carry” and have attempted to pass it other states. The idea behind the bill is simple: A license should not be required to practice a constitutional right. If passed and signed into law, it would become effective Nov. 1.

So Who Is Piers Morgan?

Morgan is an outspoken advocate of gun control who often tries to spin stories to support his position. As previously reported by Off The Grid News, Morgan in a January interview tried to irritate Florida Sheriff Chris Nocco by interjecting gun control into a brief interview about a theater shooting.

Even liberal publications such as New Republic have criticized Morgan for his gun control advocacy. New Republic writer Laura Bennett noted that Morgan might be trying to distance himself from his past as a notorious tabloid journalist in Great Britain.

Among other things, Morgan was the editor of the notorious tabloid News of the World which was shut down because of the phone hacking scandal. Later on Morgan was fired from his job as editor of The Daily Mirror after the tabloid published phony photos of British soldiers torturing Iraqi prisoners.

“In gun control as in celebrity sex busts, he is a mastermind at the game of cheap provocation,” Bennett wrote of Morgan. Bennett noted that Morgan’s recent gun control crusade seems timed to coincide with Morgan’s new book, Shooting Straight: Guns, Gays, God, and George Clooney.

Bennett also posted what she calls Piers Morgan’s “five worst gun control clips.” Some of what Bennett calls Morgan’s “brain-melting dialogue” includes:

    • Comparing America’s gun culture to southern racism in May 2013.
    • Saying: “You’re an unbelievably stupid man, aren’t you?” to guns rights activist Larry Pratt in December 2012.
    • Inviting John Lott Jr., the author of More Guns, Less Crime, on his show in February 2013, then talking over the author for 10 minutes rather than listening to him.
    • Telling British comedian Ricky Gervais in September 2013 that Iowa issues gun permits to the blind. Gervais had a pretty cold response to Mr. Morgan’s rant, saying, “Dear America, don’t let Piers buy a gun.”
