More than 200 years after America’s Founding Fathers gathered in Philadelphia to draft the US Constitution, a growing movement of libertarians and conservatives is pushing to amend the Constitution to rein in the federal government.
But is it a good idea?
A so-called Convention of States or Article 5 Convention is the topic of this week’s edition of Off The Grid Radio, and we have representatives from both sides of the debate.
It’s not a hypothetical issue, as three states already have passed resolutions calling for a convention, and supporters believe that by 2016 – right in the middle of the presidential election – they will have reached the threshold for a convention to be called. It would be historic. And controversial.
Joining us to make the case for a Convention of States is Mike Farris, head of the Convention of States Project, chancellor of Patrick Henry College and chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association.
Joining us to argue against a Convention of States is Scott Bradley, who is part of the John Birch Society’s speakers’ bureau, a contributor to New American magazine and founder and chairman of the Constitution Commemoration Foundation.
Supporters say an Article 5 Convention is the solution to an out-of-control federal government. Opponents says such a convention only will make things worse.
