All-Natural Ways To (Finally) Quit Smoking

Have you resolved to quit smoking? If you have, consider using herbal remedies to help you cut down or quit. Herbs can simultaneously make quitting easier and improve your health.

Herbal cigarettes may be used to help you transition from smoking tobacco to becoming a non-smoker. Some herbs are relaxing. Others supply nutrients which smokers generally lack. Herbs may be used to relieve coughs and enhance detoxification of your body.

What about Herbal Cigarettes?

Herbal cigarettes may be used in two ways. Some people use herbal pipes and cigarettes to help wean themselves away from tobacco. The other reason to use an herbal cigarette, ironically, is to reduce shortness of breath and open up air passages. While herbal cigarettes are not as safe as abstaining from cigarettes, they do provide a substitute for the habit of having a cigarette to puff.

The herbs are safer than tobacco, as they do not contain addicting nicotine. The downside is that you are still smoking and inhaling particles of smoke and other compounds into your lungs. I only recommend herbal smoke as a temporary measure to be used during the initial phase of smoking cessation — and for occasional use when you feel like “I’ll go crazy if I don’t have a cigarette.”

Hard-core smokers may choose to reduce reliance on tobacco products by combining tobacco with herbs and gradually reducing the amount of tobacco in the cigarettes or pipe. Tobacco chewers may safely use herbs as substitutes for chewing tobacco. Keep the herbal “tobacco substitute” on hand for moments when you are tempted to reach for a cigarette.

Mullein is a Valuable Herb for Smoking Cessation

Many smokers suffer from asthma, COPD and chronic bronchitis. The herb mullein is the best herb to use for smoking cessation. Herbalists historically recommended mullein cigarettes to relieve asthma attacks. Mullein offers many health benefits: It effectively opens up and relaxes tight airways. It relieves coughs, reduces inflammation, and supports the health of your mucus membranes. Mullein can loosen and thin thick secretions.

Mullein is not tasty. I recommend using a blend of herbs. Try combining mullein with a little citrus peel or tastier herbs, such as cooling peppermint or sweet chamomile flowers. Peppermint and chamomile are both soothing. Rosehips contain concentrated amounts of vitamin C, which smokers often lack. Citrus peel binds with carcinogens in your body, aiding their elimination. All of the herbs contain micronutrients, which enhance your wellbeing.

How to Make a Cup of Mullein Tea

Mullein does not have to be smoked in order to be effective. An infusion of the leaves may be made by covering one teaspoonful of dried leaves or one tablespoonful of fresh leaves with one cup of boiling water. Cover the cup and let the leaves infuse for 20 minutes. Then strain out the leaves. You may obtain mullein leaves from herbalists or gather your own. It is a common weed throughout much of the US and Canada.

Even more effective than the leaves of the mullein plant are the roots, which have stronger relaxing actions. This soothes inflamed, tight airway tissues as well as helps you to feel calmer during the quitting process. Use the same proportions of the root as you do for the leaves. Instead of pouring boiling water over the leaves, simmer the root for 20 minutes, covered. Then strain out the root and drink the tea.

Drink the tea at least three times per day. Try adding peppermint, chamomile or lemon balm to make a tasty blend. Small amounts of rose petals or lavender may be added to your blend as well. These herbs are gentle relaxants which soothe your lungs, support cardiovascular health, and ease jitters. You also may make or purchase mullein tincture.

Detoxification is Important

Your body is rapidly getting rid of accumulated carcinogens and other toxins during the quitting process. Efficient detoxification makes quitting easier, relieves cravings, and helps you to gain a new vibrant level of health quickly. It is essential that you consume lots of fluids while quitting smoking. Exercise each day. Exercise promotes detoxification, improves your lung capacity, supports your circulation, and relieves stress.

Herbs can help your body to rid the effects of smoking. Consume dandelion or burdock root regularly. They may be added to your tea or taken as tinctures. These herbs support liver and skin health. The liver and skin are the main detoxifiers of your body.

You Can Quit Smoking

Quitting smoking is hard. Some experts believe that nicotine is more addicting then heroin. Quitting smoking requires mind, body and spiritual approaches. One day at a time, one moment at a time, you will succeed.

Herbs are not a cure for smoking, but they do provide you with options which increase the effectiveness of your smoking cessation plan.
