Solar and wind energy are the alternative energy options most often chosen by those seeking an off-ramp from the grid superhighway. But while solar and wind may indeed be the most reasonable choices for many, it is always best to keep an open mind, and post-grid adventurers should strive be as flexible and creative as

The search for home energy alternatives has been heating up in recent years, thanks to high utility costs, undependable service, and a general desire to return to a more authentic and sustainable style of living. This has helped stimulate mini-booms in small-scale wind and solar, and it has even helped rejuvenate wood burning, the oldest

There has been one constant in all of recorded human history: our dependence on water. We need it to live, but not only to drink. Water can be harnessed in a multitude of ways to supply us with power, warmth, food, and even enhance our shelter. Over the years, water power generation has improved tremendously.

Creating energy from an existing water source is called hydropower. Utility companies have used water as an energy source for decades. When you see a dam across a river, you’re seeing hydropower in action. You can create much the same utility for your own home power use if you have an existing water source available.

It’s been called the “Scottish Shower.” Ian Fleming’s title character, the memorable James Bond, often took this shower, which began with hot water and ended with brisk and invigorating icy, cold water, not in the movies, but in the novels themselves. Perhaps mention of this unique shower had something to do with Fleming’s Scottish background
