Modern Day Frankenfood: Why, What You Eat Is None Of Your Business

Like modern-day Dr. Frankensteins, food scientists in the employ of agribusiness have unlocked the secrets of life, and they are using their knowledge to create brand new species of plants and animals that have never existed before anywhere on earth. Genetic engineering techniques that allow splices of DNA from one organism to be inserted into

Judge Dismisses Lawsuit against Food Giant; Road Now Clear for Unlimited Lawsuits

In a classic example of a pre-emptive strike, in March 2011 a coalition of over fifty groups  representing organic farmers and non-genetically modified seed dealers filed suit in a federal court seeking protection against any potential lawsuits that might be filed against them by the chemical and agri-business giant Monsanto. The problem is that the seeds from this company’s genetically-modified crops have a tendency to spread and contaminate nearby fields growing similar crops, and farmers who have inadvertently replanted seeds that did not originate on their land are in danger of being sued by Monsanto

The Future of American Agriculture: Genetically Engineered Arrogance and the Threat of the Anti-Life Sciences

Big agriculture and the life sciences industry have developed a symbiotic relationship that has proven fruitful – and profitable – for both sides. The result has been a flood of genetically engineered seeds, animals, and food crops that have entered the food chain since the 1980s, forever revolutionizing the way that farmers produce food for animal and human consumption. Not content to rely on the carefully crafted handiwork of the Creator, scientists working in the tradition started by Dr. Frankenstein so many years ago…

Fox Guards the Henhouse in America’s Ongoing Food Fight

One of the great lies told by the media and those in power is that our political system actually provides voters with real choices. Conflict between the two political parties, or between the president and Congress, is portrayed as some kind of titanic struggle between competing ideologies with different visions for America. And yet, mysteriously, as individual politicians come and go, and the balance of power constantly shifts back and forth between Democrats and Republicans, somehow nothing ever changes. Or more correctly, things just keep getting worse.

Department of Transportation Looking to Put Small Farmers Out of Business

In May of this year, the Department of Transportation proposed a potential rule change that could dramatically impact already-beleaguered small farmers across the nation. The DOT, operating through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, has suddenly decided that all farm vehicles and all mechanized farm equipment should be classified as Commercial Motor Vehicles. Furthermore, anyone living or working on a farm would be required to have a commercial drivers license before they would be allowed to operate motorized farm machinery such as tractors and other types of harvesting and hauling equipment. Based on an extensive

GMOs — A Toxic Plume to Rival Your Worst Fears

We have addressed before the threats posed by genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the food production system. We say “in the food production system” rather than “in food,” because these GMOs, once introduced into the environment, may have effects far beyond a particular genetically modified food and whether or not we eat it. In a
