McDonald’s Website Tells Employees: Don’t Eat Our Food

mcdonalds, unhealthy, employeesA corporate website has advised McDonald’s employees that cheeseburgers and fries are an unhealthy meal choice – a significant admission from the world’s largest hamburger chain restaurant.

The advice was dispensed on McResource, a website for McDonald’s employees that since has been shut down.

“While convenient and economical for a busy lifestyle, fast foods are typically high in calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar, and salt and may put people at risk for becoming overweight,” McResource told employees.

McResource reportedly displayed a picture of a cheeseburger, fries and a soft drink next to the words “unhealthy choice” and salad, a glass of water and a submarine sandwich next to the words “healthier choice,” Britain’s Daily Mail reported. The healthy choice looks like similar to a Subway sandwich. Another graphic at the site reportedly advised employees to choose fruits and vegetables over “unhealthy fatty foods.”

Prepare now for surging food costs and empty grocery store shelves…

Site Advises Employees Not To Eat At Fast Food Restaurants

Quotes published on the Daily Mail’s website make it sound as if McResource was advising employees not to eat at McDonald’s. Some of advice included:

  • “It is hard to eat a healthy diet when you eat at fast-food restaurants often.”
  • “Many foods are cooked with a lot of fat, even if they are not trans fats. Many fast-food restaurants do not offer any lower-fat foods.”
  • “Eat at places that offer a variety of salads, soups and vegetables.”

It is easy to see why the site, which was reportedly operated by a vendor, was taken down. McDonald’s issued a statement claiming the site was taken down because of outdated and irrelevant information,” CNN reported. Here’s how a McDonald’s press release described the action:

A combination of factors has led us to re-evaluate and we’ve directed the vendor to take down the website. Between links to irrelevant or outdated information, along with outside groups taking elements out of context, this created unwarranted scrutiny and inappropriate commentary. None of this helps our McDonald’s team members.

Site Also Advised McDonald’s Workers to Apply for Food Stamps

This wasn’t the first time that McResource reportedly embarrassed the fast food giant. The site previously attracted criticism because of dubious advice.

Earlier claims against McResource included:

  • A McResource telephone phone line operator reportedly told McDonald’s employee Nancy Salgado, a mother of two, to apply for food stamps and other government benefits. Salgado had reportedly called in because she was having trouble supporting her family on $8.25 an hour. CNNMoney reported that the operator even offered to email Salgado phone numbers of government agencies so she could apply for the benefits.
  • McResource gave employees the following “helpful holiday tip:” “Selling some of your unwanted possessions on eBay or Craigslist could bring in some quick cash.”
  • A sample budget reportedly posted at McResource told employees to spend $0 on heating and $20 a month on health insurance. The budget estimated the average McDonald’s employee’s income at $2,060. A McDonald’s employee making $8.25 an hour would only make $1,320 a month. The budget showed that the employee had to work a second job to make that much money.
