How To Prepare For The Imminent 30-Year Cold Spell (You’ve Probably Never Heard Of)

The world is getting hotter, right? And soon there will be ice, no snow (pretty much) anywhere. Right?

Well, some scientists out there disagree, and say just the opposite. There are many climatologists who now believe we are on the front edge of a 30-year cooling trend — and there is a good bit of evidence to back them up. In fall 2014, all 50 states experienced cooler-than-normal temperatures. And just a few years ago, all 50 states had some sort of snowfall – at the same time.

“All you have to do is trust natural cycles and follow the facts, and that leads you to the inevitable conclusion that the sun controls the climate, and that a new cold era has begun,” says climatologist John Casey.

Since the evidence is there, we should be preparing for the cooler trend. Cooler weather brings more problems than does warmer weather. Problems with heating, power grids, food shortages and even transportation can quickly add up. Being prepared for this ahead of time will help to ensure that you and your family are safe and have minimal problems.

Here are 10 ways you can protect your family for this 30-year cooling trend.

1. Check your food storage. Food you should be storing up: canned goods, dried meats, dried fruits, vegetables, flour and wheat. And make sure that these foods are prepared for long-term storage. In these harsher, colder months, you may find roads impassable – and stores may run out of food quicker as trucks are unable to resupply the shelves. By having your own supply of food, you can survive.

2. Grow your own food. Consider investing in a greenhouse. There are many options out there, and they include building your own, finding a used one, or creating one out of recycled material. By having a greenhouse, you will be ahead of others during the cooling trend.

3. Consider farm animals. Animals like chicken and rabbits make an excellent meat source, and they are quick to reproduce. Animals that you can use for their fur like sheep, goats and alpaca are also a good idea. You can turn the fur into blankets and even use the fur for insulation.

4. Don’t forget weapons. While you may never need it, it is always better to have it. You may have to deal with someone who wants to steal your goods, or you may have a predatory animal come along.

5. Get plenty of candles and oil lamps. During a cooling trend, we will experience more snow and ice than ever before. This can lead to an extreme strain on the power grid, and with falling trees, this can quickly lead to a power outage. The power can be out for days or weeks, so you will need to make sure you have plenty of backup light.

6. Prioritize heat. The power may go out, or you may deal with extremely high heating costs. These costs can quickly escalate until you can’t afford it. Consider installing a wood stove and storing firewood. This is a relatively cheap source of heat and will help to keep costs down. If the power goes out, you can enjoy heat and even hot water from your wood heater.

7. Stock up on medical supplies. In cases of severe winter weather, you need ample medical supplies. Keep supplies for emergencies as well as for everyday use. Treatments for pain, heartburn and upset stomach should be on hand. If you have children, you will need medicine that fits their specific needs.

8. Have plenty of cleaning supplies. Keep in mind that in the colder weather, you may not always be able to get out. So always have lots of cleaning supplies handy.

9. Buy more warm clothes. You will need to have warm underwear, regular clothing and a good thick coat. Socks, scarves and hats are also a necessity. It is always a good idea to have at least two coats, as one may get wet. Good blankets are also essential. If your heat fails, layers of clothing can keep you alive.

10. Remember fun stuff, too. During this cooling trend you may be stuck in your house a lot, especially if the weather is icy or snowy. Plan for this and make sure that you have plenty of indoor activities. Have board games, cards, puzzles, movies, books and other activities to keep yourself busy. If you have children, make sure they have plenty of reading materials and toys to help keep them occupied.

While many are talking about global warming, fewer are talking about the cooling trend. This could be detrimental.  Prepare for this cooler weather before it is too late.
