Maxine Waters told Bloomberg Television that she will investigate the use of Deutsche Bank’s lending and accounts by Trump and his family.
U.S. Representative Maxine Waters (D-California) plans an investigation that could lead to the attempted impeachment of President Donald J. Trump (R-New York). In particular, Waters plans to investigate Trump’s bank accounts.
To explain in detail, pundits think Waters [1] will become chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee when the new Congress takes office in January. That committee has the power to subpoena banking records, The Hill reports.
Notably, Waters [2] promises to follow Trump’s “money trail” through the German bank Deutsche Bank AG, Bloomberg alleges. Bloomberg claims to have a “leaked memo” that details Waters’ plans for the Committee. Significantly, the memo states that Waters will examine Trump’s bank accounts.
Maxine Waters Will Use Committee To Attack Trump
Maxine Waters told [2] Bloomberg Television that she will investigate the use of Deutsche Bank’s lending and accounts by Trump and his family.
Particularly, Waters will check to see if Deutsche Bank filed any “suspicious activity” reports about Trump, the Trump Organization, or Trump family members. Federal law requires financial institutions to file suspicious activity reports on any transaction over $10,000.
The existence of a suspicious activity report does not mean laws were violated, however. Instead, such a report indicates that a banker or official finds a transaction questionable. Moreover, banks are required to file suspicious activity reports for certain types of transactions, such as payments to government officials.
Waters is probably planning to use the banking records to build a case for an impeachment of President Trump. She intends to show that Trump is violating the law by taking money from foreign governments, individuals, or companies.
Specifically, Waters will assert that such payments are “high crimes and misdemeanors.” High crimes and misdemeanors are grounds for impeachment under the Constitution.
Is Maxine Waters Punishing A Bank For Lending Money To President Trump?
On the other hand, Maxine Waters could be punishing the Deutsch Bank for lending money to President Trump.
In fact, Deutsche Bank was one of the financial institutions willing to loan money to Trump before he entered politics, Waters claims. Thus, Waters’ real agenda could be punishing a financial institution for making legal loans to President Donald J. Trump.
Another goal of Waters is to make life miserable for Trump by publically revealing all of the details of the President’s finances. Additionally, Waters hopes to distract Trump from governing with an investigation and threats of impeachment.
Maxine Waters’ Goal Is Trump Impeachment
Nevertheless, Maxine Waters’ ultimate goal [3] is the impeachment of President Donald J. Trump.
“I say ‘impeachment, impeachment, impeachment, impeachment, impeachment, impeachment, impeachment,’” Waters says of Trump in a video obtained by Fox News. Specifically, Waters made that statement to supporters during her reelection campaign in Los Angeles.
Furthermore, Waters told ABC’s The View she plans to impeach Vice President Mike Pence (R-Indiana) after she is done with Trump. Waters informed The View that she thinks Trump is an agent of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Why Maxine Waters Really Wants A Trump Impeachment
On the whole, Maxine Waters and other Democrats will attempt a Trump impeachment [4] because it will benefit them politically.
To illustrate, a failed impeachment [5] of President Bill Clinton (D-Arkansas) laid the groundwork for a long string of Republican successes. Republicans failed to impeach Clinton in 1998 but went on to impressive electoral victories.
Republicans won three of the five presidential elections between 1998 and 2016. In addition, Republicans have controlled both Houses of Congress for most of the last 20 years. Also, Republicans now control over 1,000 seats in state legislatures.
Because of all this, Democrats will imitate Republicans by trying to impeach President Trump. Notably, a Republican (George W. Bush of Texas) won a presidential election just two years after the Clinton impeachment attempt.
Why Maxine Waters Does Not Care If Trump Is Actually Impeached
Consequently, Maxine Waters’ real goal is to help a Democrat win the 2020 presidential election. Under those circumstances, a Trump impeachment does not have to succeed to help Democrats.
A Trump impeachment will probably fail because it requires a vote of two-thirds of the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, Republicans will hold more than half (51 to 54) of the Seats in the U.S. Senate next year.
However, Maxine Waters may not even care if impeachment succeeds. Instead, Waters wants to hurt Trump and help Democrats win elections. She could soon have the power to achieve those goals.
