The polling service asked 1,000 adults whether they believed various groups should have to register.
The question was phrased simply: “Would you support or oppose a national registry which requires the following groups of people to register with the government and provide their home address?”
Highlights of the disturbing survey include:
- More than half of Americans, 53 percent, want a national registry  of gun owners. That includes 68 percent of Democrats and 37 percent of Republicans.
- 21 percent of Americans support the idea of registering Christians. Breaking it down by parties, 27 percent of Democrats and 21 percent of Republicans back such an idea.
- 19 percent of Americans want Jews to register. That includes 27 percent of Democrats and 18 percent of Republicans.
- 40 percent of Americans support the idea of a national registry for Muslims. The party breakdown: 41 percent of Democrats and 49 percent of Republicans.
YouGov did not ask Americans whether atheists and other non-believers should be registered. The survey was conducted Nov. 20-23.
