Something my great grandparents stockpiled was salt, baking soda and alcohol. Used for cooking mostly but had it for medical needs, as well. They have so many uses around the house and farm. Another thing they always did to stay warm was to have their dogs sleep on the beds to get additional heat. That’s where the term three-dog night came from.

I would say that folks stocked up on fuel for oil lamps also. I have a few of my great-grandma’s oil lamps from the 1800s. They also stocked up on material scraps to make quilts over the winter.
