With winter weather just around the corner, many of us will put snow tires on our cars and pull out the chains to use as we snowplow the roads. But have you ever considered the idea of buying a snowmobile for survival?

The snowmobile is essentially the ATV of winter. It gets you where you want to go, handles the snow great, and is immensely fun to ride. Snowmobiles, though, are much more than a recreational vehicle. Granted, anyone into snowmobiling will tell you how fun it is to get together with friends on a winter weekend out at a cabin by a mountain, and then climb the hills and break new snow trails in the woods.

The reason why many people avoid snowmobiles is because they believe they are vehicles only used in recreation or by winter safety patrols. Very few actually consider spending the money and time to buy and learn how to drive one.

In all honesty, a snowmobile is going to spend three-fourths of the year in the shed. But when the snow starts to fly and whiten the ground, you’ll find that they come in handy. Ultimately, if you’re serious about survival, you know that having good transportation is a must. To this end, you should have a vehicle, an ATV or a motorcycle of some sort, and bicycles. But there’s a few valid reasons why you should consider a snowmobile for winter transportation.

Snowmobiles will get you where you want to go in the winter. If the grid goes down during the winter time, you might find yourself in a position where you need to traverse the terrain quickly, for a number of different reasons.

You may need to embark on a hunting trip to provide food for the family. There may be a family emergency miles away. Or you may need even to make a quick getaway from where you are.  Plain and simple, during the winter, there is no vehicle better for any of this than a snowmobile.

New snowmobiles are expensive, but with a little patience, you should be able to find a used snowmobile in good condition that will only require a little maintenance.

What kind of snowmobile should you buy? The best brands of snowmobile to consider are Yamaha, Ski-Doo, Polaris and Arctic Cat. Why? Because these are the four most popular brands in North America.

Snowmobiles come in two basic types: two stroke or four stroke, and in long track or short track. Four strokes will have more power, and long tracks will get you into more difficult places where a short track won’t. Generally speaking, four stroke long track snowmobiles are best suited for snowmobile recreationists who love to climb up hills or boon dock trails through the woods. If all you are using your snowmobile for is to travel across the snow-covered terrain, then a two stroke short track should be all you need, as they will usually be much cheaper.

What gear should you put in your snowmobile? Include some basic survival materials in your snowmobile at all times: a bungee cord with a hook on both sides, a red can of gasoline, and a bottle of oil. The bungee cord will help you get someone else unstuck. Gasoline and snowmobile oil are a must, especially if you plan on riding far out from your home.
