Garlic Growing Tips?

I wanted to give you a tip for growing garlic in harsh climates. I plant my garlic in straw. I did a trench approximately 8 inches deep. I fill the trench with 4 inches of straw then place the garlic cloves on it and cover with 2 inches more straw and then cover with 2 inches of dirt. The straw decomposes, causing a slow release of heat. In the spring I have a great crop of garlic. This can also be done with potatoes. I have had great success for both garlic and potatoes.

Bio-Filter Requirements?
Dear Editor,
In your article about water biofilters, could you further describe the size/type of gravel and sand? Also do you have a source for activated charcoal or can it be made at home?

I contacted the writer of the article and this is what he had to say:
Gravel – ideally you want pea sized gravel or gravel between pea sized and marble sized. If you go to Lowe’s or Builder’s Square, they’ll have it in bags. One bag should be more than enough.
Sand – avoid playground sand. Use normal sand, such as would be used for mixing cement. Same source. One bag will be enough.
Charcoal – I found it by using www.froogle.com – look for “activated carbon” You’ll get results for a number of different suppliers and packaging. I bought 25 pound bulk bags for aquarium filters, which gave me the best possible price. I bought it from: FTFFA CoOp www.ftffacoop.com URL
