Make at least two cross-pollinating varieties of apples your family likes –  longer storage for fall and winter – the time it might be harder to get another fruit. Investigate a netbrella to keep the birds and squirrels away. Can buy a full size tree and prune back for your ideal size and amount of fruit for eating now. In tough times let the pruning go for larger tree for more provisions, God willing.

We have a variety of trees on our land, one if our favorites is Apple.  Apple wood is good for smoking meats, especially pork. The apples are great for everything from snacking to baking.  We have also used dried Apple wood in our wood stove for heat.
