Set in a post-apocalyptic America, they are confronted by criminals, starvation, harsh weather and the constant threat of wandering bands of armed cannibals. The father, played by Viggo Mortensen (of Lord of the Rings fame), is determined to protect his son at all costs and to survive with hopes of finding a better life for him.
As the movie progresses, he grows more cynical, suspicious and begins losing what little faith he has in humanity. As he does, his son (played by Kodi Smit-McPhee) allows his childlike compassion and understanding to leak into the film.
A cold, dark and troubling movie, this modern day Pandora’s Box hints at a remaining Hope, when all else is lost.
