Doing Good

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

                –Galatians 6:9

Starting tasks can be extremely exciting. We plan our course, gather any necessary supplies and then begin the task. When that mission puts us on the path of doing something good, it is even easier to be excited. Whether the job is to help a neighbor in need, teach your children, or simply taking the time to give back to others, it is enjoyable to be doing something good.

But somewhere along the way, doing something good can also become very tiring. You rarely receive any sort of praise for you work and while you do not require recognition, human nature leaves us wanting a thank you every now and then. You also may find yourself giving more and more than you ever anticipated, often at the sake of your own needs. Along the way, you may be in a situation where you are still ‘doing good’ but you are no longer doing it with a happy heart.

In his letter to the Galatians, Paul warns about this potential ‘good fatigue’. He cautions people not to get weary and give up when they are doing good works. Instead, stay focused on the end result that will occur because of your good works.

We know when we are on the right path. We simply have to take the time to stay focused on our tasks. When we find ourselves getting weary, we should refocus our energy on God and on knowing that by accomplishing our task, we are serving Him.
