Finding Your Momentum

“If you’re coasting, you’re either losing momentum or else you’re headed downhill.”

            — Joan Welsh

In its most basic definition, momentum is the force of movement that takes an object from one point to another. While momentum can be a small amount, if you ever have any true hope of accomplishing anything, real power will be required. The amount of momentum is actually determined by how long it would take to bring a moving object to rest.

While we may not be physically moving, we still require momentum in our lives. Something compels us to move forward towards our goals. Without internal momentum, we would simply lie in bed all day and never accomplish anything. (Of course, there are days I may want to do just that!!)

Thinking about my own life makes me question my momentum. What makes me get up and go in the mornings? What helps me accomplish the tasks I have set forth? I believe our momentum comes in pieces. Different things motivate each of us. For me, it begins with my faith. As a Christian, I am commanded to take action. In the 16th chapter of Mark, Jesus commands His followers to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation,” (Mark 16:15). As one of His followers, I am included in that command. I have a responsibility to continue moving and sharing His love with others around me. But, my momentum does not end there. It extends to my family and friends. Everything I do is to benefit us as a whole.

I challenge you to spend time thinking about your momentum. It is not something you can afford to lose.
