What’s In A Name

For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be upon his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. —  Isaiah 9:6

Names have always been important. They distinguish from other people and at times, offer credibility. People may say, “Oh that is Mark. I know him; he’s a good guy.” For many years, names indicated more than who you were; they told what you were. Your last name might have been Baker indicating you were the town baker. Or, you might have been a Smith which would let people know they could visit you when they needed the smithy. Names might also describe where you were from. Perhaps you lived in the knolls; you might be known as John Knoll.

Jesus’ name is no different. It is unique to Him, defining who He is and lending credibility to anywhere He may travel. But, Jesus’ name differs from our own when we view it in terms of what He is. Instead of having one name and one responsibility, He has many. Jesus is known as a counselor, the Son of God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. He has other names that extend far beyond those initial ones given. In the scheme of His life, Jesus wore many hats and bore many responsibilities. As we move through this holiday season, take time to reflect on Jesus in each of his roles for your life.
