The government of North Korea has the capability to use an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapon to knock out America’s power grid, presidential candidate and US Senator Ted Cruz [2] (R-Texas) said during the GOP debate February 6.
His comments came when he was asked how he would respond, if he were president, to North Korea test launching a nuclear weapon.

“North Korea wants to launch a satellite, and one of the greatest risks of the satellite is they would place a nuclear device in the satellite,” Cruz [4] said. “It would orbit around the Earth, and as it got over the United States they would detonate that nuclear weapon and set of what’s called an EMP [5], or electromagnetic pulse, which could take down the entire electrical grid on the Eastern seaboard, potentially killing millions.”
The exchange was referencing North Korea’s launch of a rocket that its government claimed carried a satellite [6] into space on February 7. The rocket launch came just a month after the North Koreans claimed to have tested a hydrogen bomb.
“We need to harden the grid to defend ourselves, and we need missile defense to protect ourselves against North Korea,” Cruz said.
