Fear of an attack on the electrical grid is now so pervasive that it has reached the presidential debates.
Ben Carson raised the alarm about the issue during the January 14 Republican presidential debate, warning that the threat to America no long constitutes simply foreign militaries invading the nation.
“We have dirty bombs and we have cyberattacks and we have people who will be attacking our electrical grid,” was how Carson described the war of the future.

“And we have enemies who are obtaining nuclear weapons that they can explode in our exo-atmosphere and destroy our electric grid,” Carson noted.
Carson did not the name enemies, but some elements within the Iranian military have discussed using a nuclear explosion to create an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that could knock out America’s power grid.
“I mean, just think about a scenario like that,” Carson continued. “They explode the bomb, we have an electromagnetic pulse. They hit us with a cyberattack simultaneously and dirty bombs. Can you imagine the chaos that would ensue at that point? [President Obama] needs to recognize that those kinds of things are in fact an existential threat to us.”
Carson raised the possibility after moderator Maria Bartiromo asked him how would deal with ISIS.
