Texas Representative Vows to Overturn Military Base Gun Ban

US military bases are gun-free zones, essentially leaving the brave men and women who are trained to carry weapons nothing more than targets for crazies and terrorists who maneuver themselves inside the big gates and sentry posts.

U.S. Representative Steve Stockman (R.-Texas), though, is vowing to overturn the American military base gun ban and allow soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen to protect themselves and their civilian co-workers.

Aaron Alexis’ Navy Yard mass shooting and Nidal Hasan’s killing spree at Fort Hood have spotlighted a policy that many if not most Americans probably did not know existed: Military members cannot carry guns on bases.

Stockman announced his plans to overturn the gun ban during a Liberty Political Action Conference event earlier this week.

“Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone whipped out a gun back and shot that SOB,” Steve Stockman said, referencing killers on military bases. “It’s really wrong that we have a policy in which we don’t trust our military to protect themselves.”

Stockman went on to say that he wants all military men and women to be able to carry a firearm, so that if a gunman opens fires on an American base again, there will be “nine or 10 people shooting back.”

How To Defend Yourself And Your Family Against The New Breed Of Lowlife Criminal Scum

The military base gun ban was issued in 1992. The policy states that it is not permissible for non-security military members to carry a weapon on bases. It also notes that all guns on bases must be registered with base officials.

“You know, it is really strange,” Stockman told the audience, “and one of the things we’re introducing which we’ll, you’ll be the first to hear this, is that, do you all find it odd that somebody can pull out a gun on a military base and our guys can’t shoot back? I don’t know about you but I’m sitting there going, ‘that is the strangest thing.’ These are the guys that we entrust to protect our families.”

It is hard to imagine how helpless and angry the military men and women at both Fort Hood and the Navy Yard shooting felt when they came under attack but were unable to return fire to defend themselves — or to help others. Louis Gohmert (R.-Texas) also supports the lifting of the gun ban on military bases.

“I’d be all for everybody keeping their sidearms if they’re in the military and on a military installation,” Louis Gohmert said. “That’s something we need to get back to.”

John R. Lott, the author of More Guns, Less Crime, has publicly lambasted the Pentagon for prohibiting military members from carrying guns on bases.

“The law-abiding, not the criminals, are the ones who obey the ban on guns,” Lott said. “Instead of making areas safe for victims, the bans make it safe for the criminal.”

John Lott’s statement echoes those made by countless Second Amendment-supporting Americans and gun rights groups: If gun control laws thwarted violent crime, Chicago would not be one of the most dangerous cities in the country.

United States military officials are reportedly reviewing “security processes” in the wake of the Navy Yard shooting. Perhaps the review involves not only correcting the lax security credentials process but also includes a common sense approach to carrying guns on American military bases.
