Feeding God’s Sparrows

Therefore do not worry, saying, What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear? 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. — Matthew 6:31

Preppers sometimes don’t like to read the end of Matthew 6 because it appears Jesus, in his Sermon on the Mount, is telling us that being prepared is lacking faith in God, but this isn’t really the case.

The key phrase of this passage is the first part of verse 33; we are to seek FIRST God’s kingdom and His righteousness. We can only be righteous in God’s eyes by the blood of Christ; our works can’t do anything. Jesus wants us to seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness before all other things in life, and then all the little things like food and clothing will fall into place. Jesus tells us to look to the sparrows and how they rely upon God to be fed.

We seek His kingdom by doing good works. The works do not result in our salvation, but rather from our salvation. If you are a prepper, God has put a desire into your heart to be prepared for unforeseen circumstances. When you are first seeking God’s kingdom, He can use what you have learned and prepared for to help others in need. With the knowledge you have gained from prepping, you can teach, share your supplies, or even save another’s life with your skills. You just may be the tool God uses to feed His sparrows.
