Long before modern universities, the Apostle Paul saw this problem coming. Writing into a culture swollen with intellectual pride, he asked a question that still cuts clean through the noise: “Where are the wise? Where are the scribes?”
It wasn’t curiosity… it was confrontation. And if Paul stepped into our world today, surrounded by advanced tech and polished theology, he wouldn’t hesitate.
Different tools. Same rebellion.
The Child Who Ran Away from Home
Picture a young kid who decides he’s had enough of home… too many rules, too many limits. So he packs up and heads out, convinced he’ll figure life out on his own.
At first, it feels like freedom. Then reality hits fast… no food, no money, no map, no idea who to trust.
That’s not independence.
That’s exposure.
Now imagine that same child stopping strangers and asking, “Are you my father?” It’s almost absurd, but it captures exactly what happened when René Descartes tried to rebuild knowledge from scratch.
A Clever Start… and a Fatal Shift
“I think, therefore I am” sounds solid on the surface. But underneath it, there’s a quiet shift… man becomes the starting point, not God.
Descartes didn’t openly reject God. In fact, he tried to reason his way back to Him, using philosophical arguments to prove His existence.
But here’s the problem.
If you start by assuming you’re self-sufficient, you’ve already ruled out the real God before the argument even begins.
A God You Can Construct
What Descartes ended up with wasn’t the living Creator. It was something shaped by human reasoning… something dependent on man’s framework to exist.
A philosophical stand-in.
A mannequin labeled “God.”
And a God who depends on you… isn’t God.
The Vase Hits the Ground
Think of the biblical worldview like a finely crafted vase… everything connected, everything held together with purpose. God made the world, God made man, and man was placed in that world to live under His authority and care.
There was coherence. There was meaning. Nothing floated loose.
Then it shattered.
When man cuts himself loose from God, he doesn’t gain freedom… he loses the only thing holding everything together. It’s like cutting the umbilical cord before birth and calling it independence.
You don’t get freedom.
You get death.
Beads Without a String
Now picture an endless pile of beads… countless, stretching beyond imagination. But none of them have holes, and your task is to string them into something meaningful.
You can’t even connect two.
That’s what happens when God is removed from the picture. The facts don’t disappear, but they lose their connection, their meaning, their coherence.
All beads.
No string.
John Locke tried to solve this by treating the mind as a blank slate, simply receiving raw data from the world. But that approach ignores something fundamental… you were not designed as neutral.
You were made in the image of God.
When the System Breaks Down
Once that foundation is removed, the result is inevitable. The more philosophy tries to explain reality without God, the more it collapses into uncertainty.
Skepticism isn’t a glitch in the system.
It’s the system working exactly as designed.
The Glasses You Can’t Remove
Then comes Immanuel Kant, trying to hold things together. And for a moment, it looks like he succeeds… science continues, knowledge advances, structure remains.
But underneath, something changes.
Imagine wearing tinted glasses you can never take off. Everything you see is filtered, shaped, altered… and you have no way of knowing what anything actually looks like without them.
That’s Kant’s world.
The Sausage Grinder Problem
Or think of it like a grinder. Raw material goes in, but what comes out is already processed, shaped by the machine.
You never see the original again.
That’s what knowledge becomes under this system… useful, maybe, but never ultimately real.
And that has consequences.
Because a God who exists outside that system becomes unreachable, not through denial, but through limitation.
When Theology Follows Philosophy
Ideas don’t stay contained. They move, they spread, and eventually they shape the way people think about God.
And once this philosophical shift took hold, theology began to change with it.
God became less knowable. Faith became more internal. Truth became less fixed.
Then came thinkers who pushed it even further… everything becomes process, everything changes, nothing stands still.
And once nothing is fixed…
Nothing holds.
A Christ Detached from History
Even movements that tried to hold onto biblical language weren’t untouched. The framework had already shifted underneath them.
Christ became less anchored in history and more abstract—less something that happened, more something experienced.
But the real Christ stepped into time.
That matters.
He lived, died, and rose again… not as an idea, but as an event rooted in history.
The Off-Grid Mindset… At the Deepest Level
So now we come to the real issue. The off-grid mindset isn’t just about leaving systems behind physically… it’s about refusing to let broken systems define reality.
It’s about going back to what’s true at the foundation level.
And the deepest truth is simple.
You are not autonomous.
The Cord That Holds Everything Together
Man is a creature, not the Creator. Every fact, every law, every piece of reality holds together because God holds it together.
Cut that cord, and things don’t fall apart instantly… but they do fall apart eventually.
And that’s exactly what we’re watching unfold.
The Real Act of Independence
So the greatest act of independence isn’t unplugging from the electrical grid. It’s refusing to surrender your thinking to a system that’s been drifting from God for centuries.
Because once you see it clearly, you can’t go back to not seeing it.
And at that point, the choice becomes unavoidable.
Stay inside a system that’s unraveling.
Or step outside it… and return to the only foundation that ever held.
