Recently, I had an interesting conversation with my daughter. We were in the car on the way home from school and she asked, “Mama, what does my life say about me?” I shook my head, blinked my eyes, and looked at her through the rear view mirror, completely unsure what she was asking. She went on to explain that everybody’s life says something about them – what they do, what they stand for, how they live. People can tell things about you from what they see. I smiled and shook my head again (did I mention that she is 8?). Needless to say, we had an interesting discussion.
My perceptive child picked up on something many adults miss. Who we are and how we live says something significant to other people. Whether we like it or not, people watch us. They make decisions as to who they think we are based on what they see. Make no mistake about it – how you live your life sends a big message. The only thing you must work to understand is what kind of message your life sends.
More than anything, you have to determine if the message your life portrays is the one you want others to see. Are you happy with what your life says about you? Take the time to answer the question, ‘what does your life say about you’ from someone else’s perspective and make sure you are happy with that answer. Living a positive life means having the ability to live reflectively.
