Here’s Why This Homesteader Isn’t Rolling Up a Sleeve

There’s a new needle heading for pharmacy shelves this fall, and it’s worth pulling up a chair on the porch to talk about it. The FDA gave the green light on August 5th to Moderna’s first-ever mRNA flu vaccine, branded mFLUSIVA.

It’s built on the same messenger-RNA platform as the COVID shots, just aimed at influenza instead. Doses are expected to roll out within weeks, right in time for the 2026-2027 flu season.

Naturally, folks are asking whether they should line up for it. British physician and YouTube commentator Dr. John Campbell dug through the actual clinical data behind this approval, and what he found is enough to make any self-reliant family think twice. So let’s walk through what’s really in that trial paper, the way you’d walk a fence line looking for the weak spot before winter storms roll in.

A New Kind of Shot Wearing an Old Costume

Unlike traditional flu vaccines, which are grown slowly inside chicken eggs over about six months, mFLUSIVA skips the barnyard altogether.

Instead, it uses lab-built genetic instructions wrapped in lipid nanoparticles, tiny fat bubbles that carry the code into your cells. Once inside, your own cells start manufacturing a piece of the flu virus called hemagglutinin, the protein spikes the virus uses to latch onto human cells, sort of like a cocklebur hooking onto a wool sock.

Your immune system then hunts down and destroys any cell producing that protein, whether that cell happens to sit in a blood vessel, the heart, or somewhere else entirely. That’s the trade-off nobody put on the label. Now that we know how the shot works, the next question is simple: does it actually work well enough to justify that trade-off?

The Study Numbers Tell a Different Story

Moderna’s own trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, followed roughly 40,000 adults for about four months. Half got the new mRNA shot, half got a standard comparator vaccine. Out of the mRNA group, 2 percent still came down with confirmed flu. Out of the standard group, 2.8 percent did.

Crunch those two numbers together and Moderna’s marketing team gets to trumpet a “26.6 percent relative risk reduction.” Sounds impressive on a press release. But strip away the spin, the way you’d strip husks off sweet corn, and what you’re left with is an absolute risk reduction of just 0.8 percent.

That’s less than one extra person out of a hundred staying flu-free. Hardly the kind of number that should have anyone racing to the clinic.

Side Effects Piled Up Like Firewood

Grandma’s elderberry syrup never gave anyone a 6x higher chance of a serious side effect. Just saying.

Here’s where things get uncomfortable. The trial data show injection site pain hit 65.8 percent of the mRNA group, compared to 29.8 percent for the traditional shot. Fatigue showed up in 45.1 percent versus 20 percent. Headaches struck 37.8 percent versus 18 percent. Muscle aches, the kind that make hauling feed sacks feel like torture, hit 35.4 percent versus just 11.6 percent in the standard group.

Meanwhile, serious adverse events turned up in 2.2 percent of mRNA recipients, the kind that can knock a person clean off their feet and away from chores for days.

Worse still, grade 3 reactions, the more severe tier that can require a trip to the doctor, showed up 6.4 times more often in the mRNA group than the traditional one. Stack that against a mere 0.8 percent absolute improvement in protection, and the math starts looking like trading a whole hog for a handful of feathers.

Blood Clots and Heart Trouble in the Fine Print

Buried further in the safety data are two findings that deserve more sunlight than they got. Researchers flagged cases of thrombocytopenia, a dangerous drop in the platelets your blood needs to clot properly, showing up 84 days after vaccination.

They also flagged cardiomyopathy, a weakening of the heart muscle, appearing 95 days out. Both conditions take real time to surface, which raises an obvious question: how much do we really know about what happens further down the road, past the trial’s four-month window?

For anyone who’s ever nursed a sick calf back to health, you know that a treatment causing more harm than the disease it’s meant to prevent just isn’t good stewardship. And that brings us to the strangest twist in this whole story.

Washington’s Left Hand Doesn’t Know What the Right Is Doing

Just one year before this approval, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the federal government was winding down its mRNA vaccine development programs entirely.

Kennedy’s own statement said the data showed these vaccines “fail to protect effectively against upper respiratory infections like COVID and flu,” and that HHS was shifting funding toward “safer, broader vaccine platforms that remain effective even as viruses mutate.”

Yet here we are, a single year later, and the FDA just approved exactly the kind of product Kennedy’s own agency said it was moving away from. That’s the sort of contradiction that makes a person wonder who’s actually steering the ship. If the folks running our federal health agencies can’t agree among themselves on whether this technology is worth pursuing, that tells you something important. It tells you the burden of figuring this out has landed back on you and your family, same as it always does out here.

Trusting Your Own Homestead Over a Press Release

None of this is about telling anyone what to do with their own body. That choice belongs to you and nobody else. But it is worth remembering that a strong immune system doesn’t come from a syringe. It comes from the same things it always has: real food grown in real dirt, enough sunshine and sleep, clean water, and a body that isn’t run down from stress and processed junk.

Plenty of homesteading families have leaned on elderberry syrup, garlic, vitamin D, and good old-fashioned rest to get through flu season for generations, long before any lab dreamed up lipid nanoparticles.

That doesn’t mean modern medicine has nothing to offer. It simply means the decision to accept a new medical technology, especially one with adverse event numbers like these, deserves the same careful scrutiny you’d give before bringing any new animal or seed variety onto your land.

So before you or your family roll up a sleeve this fall, read the actual data for yourself. Ask hard questions. Talk to a doctor you trust, not just a headline.

Out here in corn country, we’ve learned that self-reliance starts with asking questions nobody else is willing to ask, and this new flu shot deserves exactly that kind of scrutiny before it earns a place in anyone’s medicine cabinet.
