Can Garlic Really Lower Stress? Exploring the Science Behind Garlic and Cortisol
Share on FacebookShare on XShare on TruthEmail Article

In today’s fast-paced world, stress is almost impossible to avoid. From work pressures to intensified EMF exposure and the rest of modern life’s daily stressed-filled demands, many people are searching for natural ways to manage stress and improve well-being. One surprising contender in the fight against stress may already be sitting in your kitchen… garlic.

Beyond its reputation for heart health and immune support, research suggests that garlic might help reduce cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. But how strong is the evidence, and what does this mean for everyday use? Let’s explore what the science says about garlic’s role in lowering cortisol levels.

The Science of Stress and Cortisol

When you face a stressful situation, your body responds by releasing hormones like cortisol. This hormone is essential for helping you deal with immediate challenges, giving you a quick burst of energy and focus.

However, when cortisol stays elevated for too long… like during chronic stress… it can lead to a range of health problems, including weight gain, high blood pressure, sleep issues, and anxiety. Finding safe, natural ways to manage cortisol has become a priority for many people looking to improve both mental and physical health.

The researchers noted that both raw garlic and LTAG helped bring down not only cortisol but also other stress markers like corticosterone and corticotropin-releasing factor.Garlic as a Natural Stress RelieveGarlic has been valued for centuries for its medicinal properties, from fighting infections to lowering blood pressure. But recent studies are shedding light on a new potential benefit: reducing the body’s stress response.Aged garlic extract and low-temperature air-dried garlic, in particular, have caught the attention of scientists for their unique ability to influence hormones related to stress.

One study published in the Journal of the Chinese Medical Association found that low-temperature-aged garlic extract (LTAG) significantly lowered levels of stress-related hormones, including cortisol, in mice exposed to acute stress.

The researchers noted that both raw garlic and LTAG helped bring down not only cortisol but also other stress markers like corticosterone and corticotropin-releasing factor. These garlic forms also restored balance in key brain chemicals involved in mood regulation, such as serotonin and dopamine, suggesting a broader anti-stress effect (Hwang et al., 2019).

Aged Garlic and Human Health

While much of the research has been conducted on animals, some studies on humans are beginning to show promise. Aged garlic extract (AGE) has been studied for its effects on immune function and stress in cancer patients, who often experience high cortisol levels due to illness and emotional strain.

In one clinical trial, patients who took aged garlic extract for six months not only improved their immune system activity but also showed reduced salivary cortisol levels, hinting at a potential stress-lowering effect (Ishikawa et al., 2006).

What Animal Studies Tell Us

In addition to these findings, research on rats provides more clues. In a study that explored the effects of garlic on hormone balance, rats that were given garlic supplements had significantly lower levels of corticosterone… a stress hormone very similar to cortisol in humans. Interestingly, these rats also had higher testosterone levels, suggesting that garlic may help balance multiple hormones related to stress and overall health (Oi et al., 2001).

The Connection Between Garlic and Brain Health

Stress doesn’t only affect the body; it impacts the brain too. High cortisol can disrupt neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are critical for mood, motivation, and relaxation.

The same study on low-temperature-aged garlic showed that this type of garlic helped restore normal levels of these brain chemicals in stressed mice. This suggests that garlic may not only lower cortisol but also help protect against stress-related mood problems, such as anxiety and depression (Hwang et al., 2019).

Garlic’s Stress-Fighting Compounds

Garlic contains a variety of powerful compounds, including sulfur-containing substances like allicin, diallyl disulfide, and S-allyl cysteine, which are believed to be responsible for its health benefits.

When garlic is aged or processed at low temperatures, some of these compounds become more stable and potent, potentially enhancing garlic’s stress-reducing effects without the strong odor of raw garlic. This makes aged garlic supplements a practical option for people who want the benefits without the taste or smell.

Should You Start Eating More Garlic?

Although the research on garlic and cortisol is still emerging, the existing studies are promising. Adding garlic to your diet could be a simple and natural way to help manage stress, especially when combined with other healthy habits like exercise, good sleep, and mindfulness. For those who prefer not to consume large amounts of raw garlic, aged garlic extract supplements may offer an effective alternative. However, more human studies are needed to fully understand how garlic affects cortisol in everyday life.

Cortisol and Psoriasis

I also found it interesting that studies have shown that:

  • Cortisol levels are elevated in psoriasis patients: Research has consistently shown that cortisol levels are higher in individuals with psoriasis compared to healthy controls.
  • Cortisol levels correlate with psoriasis severity: Studies have found that cortisol levels are positively correlated with psoriasis severity, suggesting that higher cortisol levels may be associated with more severe psoriasis.
  • Cortisol reduction improves psoriasis symptoms: Reducing cortisol levels through stress management techniques, such as meditation or yoga, or through pharmacological interventions, such as corticosteroids, has been shown to improve psoriasis symptoms.

While the relationship between cortisol and psoriasis is complex, it is clear that cortisol plays a role in the development and severity of the condition. Managing stress and cortisol levels may be an important aspect of psoriasis treatment and prevention.

No Magic Bullet… But…

Garlic is more than just a flavorful addition to your meals. It may also be a natural ally in managing stress and lowering cortisol. While it’s not a magic bullet, including garlic as part of a balanced diet could be a small but powerful step toward better stress resilience.

As research continues, garlic’s role in supporting mental and hormonal health may become even clearer, offering hope for those looking for natural ways to cope with modern-day stress.
