lavender herbs relax sleepDid you know that herbs can increase your energy levels and also help you to relax? Herbs have profound effects on your nervous system.

Some herbs are rich sources of essential fatty acids which soothe, nourish and protect your nerves. In addition, essential fatty acids reduce pain and irritability.

Herbs known as “nerviness” are calming. Stimulating herbs enhance concentration and boost energy levels.

1. Calm Your Nervous System And Relax With Herbs

Oils of evening primrose, flax, black currant, hemp, and borage seed contain nerve protecting, stress-reducing, nourishing compounds which soothe and strengthen the nervous system. The oils are best consumed in combination with natural vitamin E, which contains mixed tocopherols. Vitamin E provides additional health benefits and stabilizes the seed oils.

Take a multivitamin with extra B vitamins, often referred to as a stress formula multivitamin, to obtain nutrients which enhance the effects of the essential fatty acids and optimize your health.

Oats contain calcium and B vitamins which feed and relax the nervous system. Milky oat tops may be obtained from herbalists and made into teas. Simply including oatmeal in the diet is helpful, as well.

German Chamomile is a simple-to-grow annual herb. It is calming and delicious. Chamomile may even be used safely for restless children. Chamomile reduces stress and headache pain. Drink chamomile tea regularly for the best effect as its effects are cumulative. If you get a nervous stomach when stressed, chamomile will help to soothe away butterflies.

Lavender is another time-tested herb used to relieve stress. It has a strong taste, so just add a few flowers to an herbal tea blend to reap its benefits. Take a whiff of lavender essential oil whenever you feel anxious for immediate relief. Add some to bathwater for a relaxing soak. Lavender provides relief to nervous stomachs, too.

Passionflower soothes nervous tension and loosens tight muscles. It can help to relieve insomnia. Passionflower relieves stress-related headaches, including migraines which are triggered during times of stress. Passionflower contains natural substances which help to improve mood.

2. Get Some Sleep

Nutmeg has been used for millennia as a brain tonic. Nutmeg contains compounds which relieve stress and anxiety. I sprinkle about an eighth of a teaspoon of nutmeg in a cup of a warm beverage on nights when I suffer from insomnia. It tastes terrific and helps me relax and fall asleep. It also helps to relieve muscle tension which interferes with sleep. If you like warm milk, add nutmeg to that. Enjoy it before bed for additional sleep-inducing benefits. Only use nutmeg in small amounts. Do not use nutmeg medicinally while pregnant, as excessive amounts may promote miscarriage.

Other herbs which promote sleep include valerian and hops. Both are bitter in flavor, so I recommend taking them in a tincture form. They are especially effective when taken together. Do not use hops if you suffer from depression. A very small number of people are not calmed by valerian. Instead, it wakes them up. Start with a small amount of valerian to ensure that you are not one of those people.

3. Energize and Focus

Many herbs can give you a needed boost when you are dragging and can’t concentrate. Did you know that coffee is an herb? As long as you do not consume coffee excessively, its caffeine can give you a jolt of energy. Other herbs which contain caffeine in lesser amounts include green and black teas, guarana, chocolate and yerbe mate.

If you are seeking to energize and focus without caffeine; basil, rosemary, and mint are excellent choices. Rosemary is called the herb of remembrance. It is especially useful if you are faced with a tedious job which requires a great deal of concentration.

Peppermint, spearmint, apple mint and chocolate mint all have different flavors. Peppermint and spearmint are the most beneficial; however, the other mints offer similar benefits. Have a glass of iced peppermint tea to will wake up and focus. Combine it with black or green tea if you want the additional stimulating effects of caffeine. Mints tame nervous stomachs, too.

Try This Tea Recipe

Try this tasty tea the next time you need energy or have a difficult task before you.
