A Firm Foundation

24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.  Matthew 7:24-25

Without a good foundation, even the best built building is a pile of rubble waiting to happen. Our faith, without a solid foundation, will crumble in the storms of life.

The “sayings” that Jesus is speaking of are several teachings He shared in what is called “The Sermon on the Mount.”  Jesus is telling us to know what we believe and why we believe it. When we have a good foundation, we can weather the storms that would wash away a shaky foundation.

The foundation of our faith – what we build on – is the gospel. The good news itself is the fact that we are all sinners, unable to do anything to save ourselves. Since we are unable to save ourselves, we are unable to approach God. So if we are to have fellowship with God, He must somehow approach us. He has done that through the sacrifice of His only son, Jesus Christ. Our solid foundation is our faith in Jesus Christ as savior.

Peter confessed Jesus as the Christ, and Jesus said that He would build His church upon that rock.

A foundation doesn’t do much unless it is built upon. When you have a solid foundation, you then can use it to examine every layer of your life.  If it doesn’t match the foundation, it should be torn out, cast aside and replaced with something that does.

How solid is your foundation?
