“The time when you have seen only one set of footprints is when I carried you.”
— Author Unknown
Most of us are familiar with the poem quoted above. We have seen it on calendars, wall hangings, plaques, and other decorative items. Although the original author is still debated, the meaning of the poem is not. It lifts us up, chronicling the story of an individual who recalls the best and more difficult moments of life. Those moments are seen on the shore of a beach in the form of footprints. Sometimes there are one set; other times there are two. The author questions why God disappears during difficult times and God reminds her that is when she was carried.
We know God supports us. He lifts us when we are weak and carries us when we are unable to go on. But, being carried includes an element of trust. Our trust in Him enables Him to carry us. However, His trust in us enables it just as much. When He carries us through difficult times, He trusts we will lean on Him, listen to His word and guidance, and live according to His will.
There is no doubt each of us will face difficult times in our lives. It does not matter what the event is, there will come a time when we will need help. Will we trust God enough to carry us? And will He be able to trust we will accept the help he offers?
