Monsanto just wants to help poor people gain access to food, and all opponents to the GMO-infused crops are merely elitists. No, I have not been drinking while writing, nor do I think the statement is the least bit accurate; yet the sentiment is exactly what Monsanto CEO Hugh Grant wants the American people to believe. The mega-biotech company is apparently trying to turn the negative press coverage about their pesticide resistant crops into a new direction. During an interview with Bloomberg News, Hugh Grant states that those who loathe GMOs are simply not at

America’s food supply is in danger, and not just from Monsanto and GMO crops. The declining number of farmers in the United States has paved the way for more imports of consumables from China. A recent congressional hearing about the increasing amount of food being shipped from China revealed that only 2 percent of such products actually undergo safety testing. Although there was rare bi-partisan support over the potential health risks posed by the lax oversight, the only action the governing body took was to plan another meeting on the matter later this year. Between

Minnesota dairy farmer Michael Hartmann is the latest casualty in the legal battle against raw milk. Hartmann has been charged with multiple misdemeanors related to the sale of raw dairy products. The Worthington farmer was first charged with selling raw milk on 2010. Health department officials had reportedly linked E. coli sickness to the Minnesota diary farmer’s raw milk – he pled guilty to the charges. The guilty plea was reportedly entered into in exchange for dropping similar charges against Hartmann’s wife, brother, and an elderly farm employee. Now, three new complaints have been levied

Articles about the Monsanto Protection Act continue to achieve viral status online. The GMO seeds and GMO ingredients legislation has prompted outrage by organic food activists, farmers, the homesteading community, and a host of celebrities. President Barack Obama promised during a 2007 Iowa speech that he would make sure that Americans would know what went into our food; he even went so far as to call food labeling a right. President Obama’s thoughts on GMO crops must have “evolved” significantly in the matter of just a few years. His support of the biotech rider on

DuPont and Monsanto just struck a $1.75 billion deal that allows the world’s two largest seed producers to increase GMO seed technology sharing. The Monsanto Protection Act spurred a host of farmers from across America and Food Democracy Now to protest in front of the White House on Wednesday. A Food Democracy Now petition implored President Barack Obama to pen an executive order to thwart the Monsanto Protection Act. The president signed the bill into law recently. The legislation would allow GMO ingredients in food to go unlabeled, among a plethora of other disturbing new

APPLE RIVER, IL – An Illinois beekeeper may be the target of the Illinois Department of Agriculture because of his research into the connection between Roundup and the worldwide decline in bee populations. Terrence “Terry” Ingram, owner of Apple Creek Apiaries, recently returned to his property to find his bees and beehives had been stolen from him by the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDofA). He reports his over 15 year of research that proves Roundup is the cause of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) was taken as well. Ingram’s problems began last summer when he gave

Two weeks ago, as I was finishing up the piece on “Savory Herbs and Unsavory Weather,” I decided that today’s column would focus on invasive herbs. Unfortunately, another potential invasion has caused me to put that plan on the back burner. This invasion is so imminent that I can’t wait two weeks to give you the news. Because I was caught napping, I barely have one week to help spread the alarm. When it comes to genetically modified crops and their associated herbicides, Monsanto and Roundup certainly dominate the discussion. This is only natural. Monsanto’s
