From my 93-year-old mother growing up in Iowa: My dad and grandma knew the good tree fungus. They called it “kozy-brada” or goat’s beard. It had a meat consistency, my mom would wash it, slice it, dip it in egg and flour and fry it. Tasted like steak. I’ve eaten it many times.
