Unplugged and Unprepared: The Growing Threat to America’s Power Grid
In an era defined by AI, electric vehicles, and digital everything, the lifeblood of modern civilization—electricity—is increasingly under threat. Electricity demand is projected to triple by 2035, yet the U.S. has not embraced a Manhattan Project-scale initiative to meet it. Instead, it’s been paralyzed by political inaction, environmental red tape, and sabotage of domestic energy production. Democrats under the Biden administration have throttled pipelines, drilling, and mining—crippling America’s ability to be energy independent.
Grid Sabotage: A Real and Present Danger
Asymmetrical warfare is no longer theoretical. We’ve seen drones rigged with explosives used in Ukraine and Iran to destroy power infrastructure with stunning precision. The same tactics could be replicated in the United States using drones bought online and trucks rented at any Home Depot. And with open borders, intelligence sources warn of foreign actors already in place with the tools and training to carry out coordinated attacks.
The nation’s 2,000 substations are often protected by nothing more than a chain link fence. Experts warn that disabling as few as nine of them could bring the entire grid down. And while we spend $14 billion annually on TSA to prevent bombings on planes, the grid—which keeps our food cold, our hospitals functioning, and our communications alive—remains dangerously exposed.
Why EMP and Solar Threats Can’t Be Ignored
EMP attacks—caused by high-altitude nuclear detonations—could fry electronics across the country. This is not sci-fi paranoia. General John Hyten, former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, affirms EMP is a grave national security threat.
While military command centers are hardened against EMPs, civilian infrastructure, including the grid, remains completely exposed. A similar danger exists from geomagnetic storms caused by solar flares, which can induce massive voltage surges in unprotected lines.
And what happens if nuclear power plants are operating during an EMP event? If backup cooling systems fail, as seen in Fukushima, the risk of meltdown becomes terrifyingly real. Decoupling from China: A Supply Chain Dilemma

A major complicating factor is that many critical grid components—from transformers to inverters—are made in China. Trump has threatened steep tariffs on China over its alliance with Russia, which could drastically increase costs and lead times for grid infrastructure.
