A North Korean ship was seized carrying missiles through the Panama Canal. Panama President Ricardo Martinelli stated the “undeclared military cargo” were illicit goods and presumably sophisticated missile equipment.
The Cuban missiles inside the North Korean ship were reportedly concealed inside two large containers of sugar. The ship had recently left a Cuban port and was on its way back to North Korea when the Panama Canal search occurred. The Asian nation which has vowed to attack the United States on multiple occasions has allegedly been a frequent black market weapons purchaser for years.
The Chong Chon Gang ship first attracted attention when a “violent reaction” by both the crew and the captain became obvious to Panama Canal officials, President Martinelli also stated during media interviews. All 35 crew members were ultimately arrested and the captain of the North Korean ship attempted to commit suicide.
