Another Elderberry DIY Medicine

My family has used elderberry tonic (syrup) for several years. When my wife was going through chemotherapy, we could actually see the difference in her white blood count when she took it vs. when she did not. It is a wonderful medicine.

In a non-reactive pot (not aluminum)

  • 1 cup dried elderberries (or 2 cups fresh)
  • 1 TBSP fresh ginger
  • 1 to 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 to 6 whole cloves
  • 6 cups water

Bring to low boil and simmer until about half of the water is evaporated; then let cool. Once cool, strain solids out. A one-gallon paint filter/strainer works very well as it lets you squeeze out the juice from the solid. It may be rinsed out and reused, too.

Once liquid is separated, warm it up again (just warm, no need to boil). When warm, add 16 oz. of local honey and 1/2 cup 100 proof vodka. Store in the fridge and take 2 TBSP daily. Take additional doses if you get sick.

You may also add fresh blackberries or blueberries, if desired. Orange peel may also be used. Organic ingredients are preferred.

Regards,

Jay
