Readers Give Thoughts On Unions, Broken Supply Line

And this is why so many people hate unions. No group should be allowed to hold an entire industry and by extension, a nation, hostage in order to secure power and profit. Employees have a right to safe working conditions and reasonable benefits, but this shutdown of ports goes way beyond that. This is greed and arrogance being wielded as a weapon against us.

I work for a company here in Austin, Texas. We have been having trouble for 3 weeks getting supplies from one of our vendors in California, because of this issue. Honestly, if it weren’t for the fact that we are scrambling, and have been, and will continue to do so, I wouldn’t know a thing about it. I talked with a vendor today and he said he has never seen so many ships just sitting out in the ocean his entire life. The backup is not just the unloading of the ships, but the very product on the docks isn’t being moved…quickly…so it started becoming a problem. Now, if the Labor Secretary forces a resolution, the next issue will be the gridlock that is created by the trucking industry when they start charging an arm and a leg to move the stuff off those docks. With so much waiting to be moved, the bidding wars will begin. It doesn’t look to get any prettier, any time soon. Good luck getting your coffee served in a cup (our issue), new Levis shorts, or some Tyson chicken over the next weeks or months.
