80-Year-Old Man Greets Child In Grocery, Gets Visit From Police

Simply talking to a strange child in public can lead to a police visit in Australia. An 80-year-old man was stopped by a plainclothes police officer and then visited at his home by two detectives — simply because he chatted with a boy at the supermarket.

The unidentified man stopped to speak kindly with a young boy and put his hand on the boy’s shoulder in September, the mom wrote in a now-public letter. That simple act – common in grocery stores across America – led to the mom reporting the elderly man. A policeman talked to the man in the parking lot.

A few days later, two police detectives appeared at the man’s home in Winmalee, New South Wales, to question him. The detectives showed up unannounced, even though they admitted that surveillance camera footage verified the man had done nothing wrong.

The letter was first discovered taped to the wall of a shopping center in Winmalee. It was written by the man’s daughter, who noted that older people “take joy” in talking to young people.

“I cannot express how much your action of alarm has struck at the confidence of an older man,” the letter states. “His expression of goodwill undone by an overly zealous parent, who did not have the courage to speak of their opinion directly to my father, or guide the child away, or to join in and add to the conversation.

“Instead, you covertly and unnecessarily inform authorities,” it continues. “About what, I do not know. We were all strangers once to others we now know — overcome through communication skills, learned and improved by conversing with an array of persons.

“And a closed, dysfunctional society is formed of reading too much into a situation, and acting on exaggerated thought and impulsive negative action, rather than that of a considered positive outlook.”

It’s sad the world has come to this state where folks are all suspect.
Innocent acts are perceived as acts of perversion, all do to liberals and the world they created.
Hopefully Christ will return soon and take us away from all this.

  2. I had so many older people stop and talk to my kids when they were small. I cannot imagine calling the police on them! That woman should be ashamed of herself. What is wrong with these young people today, and what is wrong with the police that they would see an innocent encounter and still harass the man?

  3. I dont think that this man has done anything wrong but i don’t think we should grief to the mom maybe something has happened in the past to her and she is just trying to be care ful.

As an australian this sort of crap deeply embarrasses me. I bet the mother is an Iphone zombie as well!
25 years of nursing showed me the loneliness experienced by many older people in our community.
Many are not visited by their children or grandchildren. Living alone they have what we call “skin/contact hunger” just the simple act of touching another person’s hand or a hand on the shoulder negates
this condition. Give an older person you know a hug today! They may appear shocked as they are so used to being ignored. We all will be there sooner or later. And the police involved should have used some brains and discretion.

    I agree certainly.

  5. I do not know exactly what happened but again i do not believe any one did anything wrong in this situation. Sure the mom could have joined the situation and she didn’t have to call the police but she was just being protective. I do not think their was any reason to call the authorities. The police should not have came and harassed him after the fact that they realized that there was nothing done in this situation. Everyone is like put God back in this world and i agree that God needs to change people’s hearts but is their hearts any different from ours? The mom was just being protective but everyone is here mad at the mom is that any better?

J, this parent while she may have thought her reaction was necessary really wasn’t.
She overreacted to an innocent encounter.
If she or anyone else had witnessed this man touching her child in a wrong way or the child was screaming from fright, that would be a different story.
This parent has been brainwashed by the PC liberal mentality and can not decipher good from bad.

  6. Maybe the mom thought the man was a politician.

  7. I don’t think the old man was trying to do anything bad. The mother was either exaggerating or just trying to protect her son because something might have happened to her in the past days. Either way, the women shouldn’t have called the policemen for a dumb reason. Plus, what did the child tell the mom.

  8. Assuming that the mother was standing right there while the two were in conversation AND assuming that the child was not made to feel uncomfortable by the man speaking to him, the mother was in the wrong. Trouble is that media loves to be sensational, blow things out of proportion or cause a ruckus. (This is what sells) (This is what people like to get excited by and about). If this is the case, that poor man will be discouraged of communication with others from this day on.

  9. The mom was overprotective.

I think that the world needs to wake up. Just because a elderly man lays his hand on a younger boy doesn’t mean that he wants to do anything to them. the mom is an inconsiderate human being and shouldn’t be putting someone on the spot like that. when you do that to a man, you will ruin his life. Why not ask what hes doing instead of jumping to conclusions. He has lived a long time and he has seen things no one should. People like her should get a life and stay away from others it makes you look like trash.

  11. It could be worse. Thank God that the old man was not shot by the plainclothes police !

  12. Poor man.He was just talking to the kid.He did nothing wrong. The surveillance camera proved that!
