Oregon Lifts Ban On Pumping Your Own Gas (Sort Of)

Oregon Lifts Ban On Pumping Your Own Gas (Sort Of)

The state of Oregon has finally loosened restrictions that prohibited residents from pumping their own gas – even though it’s still illegal in most of the state.

Self-service gas stations became legal in 15 rural Oregon counties on Monday.

The new law, HB 2482, decriminalized gas pumping at any time in 15 counties with populations under 40,000, The Bulletin reported.

Pumping your own gas is still banned for 90 percent of the population.

Some Oregon residents, though, didn’t take kindly to the new law.

“I don’t even know HOW to pump gas and I am 62, native Oregonian…..I say NO THANKS!” resident Sandy Franklin posted on Facebook.

The San Francisco Chronicle and Texas TV station KSAT 12 were among the many out-of-state media outlets making fun of some Oregonians’ fear of gas pumps.

“Many people are not capable of knowing how to pump gas and the hazards of not doing it correctly,” Tina Good wrote. “Besides, I don’t want to go to work smelling of gas when I get it on my hands or clothes.”

“I’ve lived in this state all my life and I REFUSE to pump my own gas,” Mike Perone wrote. “I had to do it once in California while visiting my brother and almost died doing it. This a service only qualified people should perform. I will literally park at the pump and wait until someone pumps my gas. I can’t even.”

New Jersey is the only other state where filling your gas tank is still a crime.

  1. I’m from North Eastern Oregon, transplanted to Texas, I’m Soo fricken embarrassed by Oregonians and their bullcrap that I’m officially disowning the state, those of you who can’t figure out a dang pump should be embarrassed

  2. “This a service only qualified people should perform.”

Where can I go to school to learn this valuable skill? Will they also teach me how to use dangerous tools like umbrellas and automatic doors? 😉

  3. It not like it is hard to pump gas. A small child could do it. You pick the handle up and stick in the tank. When it is full it will stop even if you squeeze the handle.

  4. Oregon and New Jersey, two states that voted foe Miss “exit stage left”.
Maybe they could get “pump permits”. Imagine how much the government could squeeze out of them.

  5. I feel like there is a reason for everything. Oklahoma and Texas have their own stupid rules but, you don’t see Oregon going around and making fun of us do you? There are some people who have issues yes, but Oregon is just trying to protect their gas and their people. There could be some something that is different about their pumps than ours that the people just aren’t getting. All that i want people to know is that you can think that something is dumb or that it is a stupid rule or stuff like that but always know that there might be a legitement reason to the situation. Thanks

  6. The idiot who almost died from pumping his own gas should certainly not be allowed to drive a car, own a home, vote, or raise children. 100% serious! No excuse for that kind of stupidity.
