God’s Dietary Laws: Why Pigs, Crabs And Lobsters Are Bad For You

Editor’s note: This is part 2 in a 3-part series by the author on dietary laws in the Bible. The views are those of the author. Read part 1 here.

God’s dietary laws prohibit eating carnivorous animals. Just as God created clean animals for food and by-products that humans could use, he created unclean animals for other reasons. Carnivores are prey animals that help to control the populations of other animals. Such is the case with mountain lion and wolves who keep deer populations in check. This helps keep the deer population down and weeds out the old and sick members of the herd naturally. This is just one good reason why we should not eat carnivores — sick animals could transmit disease.

Leviticus 11:7-8 and Deuteronomy 14:8 mention specifically that pigs are unclean and not fit for human consumption. Domesticated pigs have been used for a very long time as scavengers and will eat anything from garbage to dead animals and human wastes. Today, pigs in America consume more than 20 percent of the corn harvested in our country. Feeding corn, wheat and barley to pigs puts them in direct competition with our food crops. This is probably one good reason why God declared them unfit to eat. Jesus even allowed a herd of pigs to run off the edge of the cliff after He cast demons into them. This showed how little regard he had for them – or just how invaluable he found them to be.

Pigs, along with other unclean animals, can also transmit trichinosis to humans. This is caused by a small roundworm that finds its way into animal and human muscle. Bear meat, walrus and pig have all been a major player in transmitting infections to humans.

In Leviticus, the laws concerning aquatic creatures are addressed:

These you may eat of all that are in the water: whatever in the water has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers—that you may eat…. Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales—that shall be an abomination to you. Leviticus 11:9, 12

Science reveals what may have been God’s reasons for declaring certain sea creatures unfit for human consumption. Clean fish are those that swim in bodies of water while unclean sea life is comprised mostly of predatory scavengers or bottom dwellers. The fish and sea life that do the ocean cleaning are full of toxins and can be harmful to human health. Poisonous fish are generally covered in bristles, spiny scales, thorns or spines and do not have any true scales.

Encyclopedia filled with traditional country skills!

Even though the Biblical dietary laws would have us eat the safest of fish we must still be very careful. Many of these fish are now polluted with heavy metals, as the health and balance of ocean ecosystems becomes disrupted — mostly due to overfishing, toxic chemical spills and pollution.

What about shellfish, crabs and lobster?

Shellfish such as crab and lobster do not have fins or scales and are therefore prohibited for human consumption under biblical dietary laws. However, shellfish is a multi-billion dollar business and eating such aquatic life considered a delicacy in most parts of the world. We know that everything God created has a purpose; so what is the purpose of shellfish, then?

Lobsters are nocturnal bottom walkers and scavengers that scavenge for dead animals and debris on the ocean floor – they are like the vultures of the oceans. Lobsters have even been seen burying dead fish and digging them up a little at a time to eat. Crabs will eat just about anything and are known as professional garbage hunters.

The Encyclopedia of Aquatic Life tells us that crabs, common shrimp and lobsters all feed off of dead and decaying matter. Therein lies their occupation — they were created to be the cleanup crew for the bottoms of lakes, rivers and oceans. They were not intended to be eaten by human beings. Eating raw or undercooked crabs, crayfish, shrimp or snails puts anyone at risk of a severe parasitic infection.

Filter feeders

Closer observation of oysters, mussels, scallops and clams shows us that God also had a very significant purpose for these creatures. They are found in streams, coastal areas and lakes and are considered filter-feeders. They are stationary — meaning they do not go hunting for their food but rather pump large amounts of water over their gills, trapping small pieces of silt, bacteria, viruses and plant debris for their dinner. The International Wildlife Encyclopedia tells us that mussels and other filter-feeders are the ultimate scavengers of the sea. They are the detail cleaners, so to speak. Their role is to purify the water.

Now, you have to ask yourself, once you really understand the role that these creatures play in their natural habitat, do you still want to eat them? Eating scavengers and filter-feeders is kind of like eating whatever is in your vacuum cleaner bag or septic tank. When scavenger and filter feeders make meals out of dead, decaying material along with pathogenic viruses, heavy metals and nerve toxins and we eat them — we are also eating all that they have eaten!

According to the FDA, raw oysters, mussels and clams are responsible for 85 percent of all illnesses caused by eating seafood. Such conditions as hepatitis A, salmonella, Norwalk virus, cholera and paralytic shellfish poisoning are just a few of the problems that are often linked to shellfish consumption. The more waste we dump into our oceans, lakes and streams, the greater the risk of getting sick from eating shellfish and other aquatic scavengers becomes.

Think about this: Pregnant women, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems are warned against handling uncooked shellfish.  If God’s dietary laws prohibiting the consumption of anything without fins or scales were followed, there would be no reason for such a warning.

Birds and Bugs

God did not leave birds, reptiles and insects uncovered in His laws. Carnivorous birds are obviously very important to controlling the populations of other groups of animals. Because these birds eat the flesh and blood of their prey, they become possible agents for transmitting disease and are unclean. Birds that prey on fish also accumulate a large amount of toxic chemicals in their bodies and are also prohibited.

Leviticus 11: 29-30; 42-43 tells us that reptiles are also unclean. Only insects from the locust and grasshopper family are permissible and have been used as a food source in the Middle East for thousands of years. John the Baptist is recorded to have eaten a diet comprised of honey and locusts.

  1. If we are to follow the laws of Leviticus for what we eat then we should follow all the laws of Leviticus. Including planting two different crops in the same garden. Prohibiting women from wearing the skin of two different animals at the same time. Not cutting a mans hair from his temples. Selling our daughters into slavery.

    • Despite what the churches say he Yashua (Jesus) was teaching, this is what he say’s he is teaching Mat 4:4 “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, But On Every Word That Comes From The Mouth Of GOD.’” mat 4:17 and preached, to Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ( he say’s) mat7:21 Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, only those who do what my Father in heaven wants. John 6:45 It is written in the Prophets, `They will all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. John 8:47 Whoever belongs to God listens to what God says;

    • Matthew Sailor-Mann

“And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.” Some people choose to call a servant a “slave” but this is not the most faithful translation. People quibble about this, yet Dowrys, arranged marriages and similar arrangements related to these things have and still exist. So go ahead and take things out of context and help spread the hate and ignorance.

      • Jesus said that He did not come to destroy the Law and the prophets, but to fulfill them. Jesus followed the Law to show that He is fit to be our Savior and to be our only example of righteousness. He did not say “there is no more law” otherwise, we are free to kill each other and other things that the law prohibits. Grace means that we obey God’s law as a result of our faith to Jesus Christ who redeemed us from our sins. God will not surely tell humans to break His own law. The law shows God’s love. Let us not hate it. Jesus is God, and He said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.”

        • You are absolutely right! It says that is the way to love Jesus, to OBEY The Ten Commandments! Jesus himself said it multiple times!

        • Jesus fulfilled the law by being the one-time-for-all substitution for the death penalty of sin. He kept the Mosaic Law (including the food law) so that by their standard he would truly be a man without sin, flawless, which would allow him to fulfill his sacrificial role.

The one time he stepped outside that was with the adulterous woman, whom He forgave using his authority as God-the Son as a teaching moment.

Paul, (disciple appointed by Jesus, and therefore speaking with His authority) put the issue to rest once and for all in Galatians.

“…for if there had been a Law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the Law. But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the Law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the Law was our tutor to bring us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor,” (Galatians 3:21–24)

      • Yahshuah also said, If you love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15. He also said, John 15:10-11 (NKJV)
10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
11 These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
Stop using Grace as an excuse to violate His Commandments.
It is true that man is not saved by keeping the commandments, but keeping the commandments is a sure shot expression of your salvation. They are like a fence around the yard that give us boundaries to live by.
Imagine you are in a bar, drinking and getting drunk, and you try to witness to someone about salvation. The first thing they will say or ask is, “Why should I get saved? I see no difference between you and me.”
In Leviticus 11:45 we are told to be set apart as Yahweh is set apart. So although grace says that you are saved by faith in Messiah, it doesn’t say, now go out and live the way you want to.
I am a Messianic Jew, and do not call myself a Christian for that very reason. I do not want to be associated with those who claim to be saved, and then go out and live the way they want to, and use the grace card as an excuse.
The last thing is what John said, in 1 John 2:6 If you are going to call yourself after Him, you are to live like Him.
so therefore, if Messiah did it, or did not do it, then we are to do or not do it, and watch this, that includes the Holidays. Do you think our Messiah would be celebrating Easter, or Christmas, knowing the origins of these pagan holidays?
He celebrated the Moadim (appointed times) as they were listed in The Torah in Leviticus chapter 23, which were given through Moses to the children of Yisrael, as His Moadim, not their Moadim. And He also said that they were to be followed, le-olam-vaed (for ever more).
I can go into a whole issue about how today’s “Christians” violate many of The Torah laws in the name of, “we now live by grace”.
And in case any of you don’t understand what a Messianic Jew is, it is someone that believes that Yahshua was Messiah, and is born again.
And to not allow anyone to get it twisted. I am not saying that violating Torah causes you to lose your salvation, because that is not possible, but it does drive a wedge into your relationship with Yahweh and you. If my son does something to cause us to part ways, we may not be in fellowship with one another, but he is still my son.
        Shalom B’Shem YHVH

        • I like what you think. I am a Seventh. Day. Adventist.

        • Inspiring words. Thank you for that. I will pray that G-d gives me great strength. I’m gonna need it.

        • Thank you for sharing this! I also know that the Father would not want his children, Jew or grafted in gentile believers to be divided. He said not to do it, and science shows and proves that their is also a very good reason to not eat what He said to. Aa Christians that claim to love and obey the Lord, how is a depiction of LOVE or fellowship with our creator defined by doing the very minimum in obedience and using Grace as an excuse to aka do whatever we want in the name of freedom. We are being deceived if we think this warms the heart of the creator. How does this say I love u, want to be in relationship w you, I am loyal to you or I obey you as my Sovereign Lord, Creator or Lover of our souls. May God grace allow us all to see more clearly beyond the deceitful belief from our churches that the Laws of God ( aka Gods Direction, Instruction of how to live, Guidance ) given for all who calls him Father and his son Savior of all who follow Him are only meant for the original Chosen Jews, don’t also want be called family and his chosen? It is just common sense if you are Gods u should be known like a banner on everything you do by the laws he has given for all people who claim to be Gods people.

        • it’s not what you eat that defile you but rather what come out of you. if you eat duck egg and garlic, or tofu and honey, if you eat pork makes sure you cook it throughly, even beef, also. everything contain germs and parasite these days. I’d rather eat pork than a poison mushroom. its all about common sense. jews have rejected Jesus, so as they are rejecting themselves. jews are sinners just as everyone else. a child was born in an abusive family, and never eating pork, and a child raising in a loving, and caring family, and always eating pork. which child will grow up and becoming a better child!?

        • Wish I could talk with you more. I was baptized Christian but like you find many who don’t even try to follow YehWeh. And since I have learned My creators real name I replace it with the name god or jesus, as there are many false gods out there. I don’t want to start rifts I just want to learn and follow YehWeh.

        • So are we to ignore Paul, apostle appointed by Jesus who spoke in His name, who said:

“…for if there had been a Law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the Law. But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the Law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the Law was our tutor to bring us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor,” (Galatians 3:21–24).

      • You are.misleading ppl. Truth is we are to follow and do what Christ did. The Bible says to be ye perfect as our Father is perfect…we have Jesus our example….what did he do? Then do as well. Don’t forget…Salvation come through the Jews. If we desire to be saved..we MUST accept CHRIST as our Savior. Follow him…by doing what HE did to set us an example..Jesus’s blood covers our sins upon repentance and turning from Sins..HIS BLOOD WILL NOT COVER US IF WE INSIST ON STAYING AND PRACTICING IN SIN.

    • poooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooop is a funny word:)

    • You are correct.

    • You know better…thats a cop-out response ..Some things DID change when it went into the New Testament But surely not the animals and food that God says were clean and unclean to us . Just makes sence that would never change

  2. Jesus, also REPEALED the “law of moses ” which condemned the use of unclean animals, and told his disciples that he came to fulfil that law, he also states that what he has cleansed he has cleansed . sorry your Bible thumping does not wash , so to speak . you can fool some of the people some of the time , but those well versed in the bible can’t be fooled 😉

    • Learning by His Will

@Greywolf – the Messiah told the disciples not to listen or to follow the Takanot of the Pharisee’s. He, Yeshsua, (Jesus), said “they who sit in Moses’ seat do that which he (Moses) told you to do, follow not the teachings of the Pharisees’ for they do not follow his (Moses’) teachings…” So Greywolf you and I were fooled by the Western Christian teachings and you now have been shown a teaching and must now act on that teaching. We have both been preached “another Jesus” and it has infected the whole of the church.
I pray the Great Spirit be your Teacher as He has been to me and His will be upon you as has been upon me. Shalom

    • Learning by His Will

@Greywolf – The teaching you report was none other than the vision Peter saw as the men sent by Yehovah came to the house where he was staying. The vision was NOT to tell Peter to eat the unclean animals but to let him know that the men (not Hebrews) He had sent, he (Peter) was to go with. And Peter even told the meaning to the men when they came to him. You must research this and know that this “clean food teaching” is contrary to the teaching of our Heavenly Father. Yeshua (Jesus) would NOT go against the Law (TORAH) and never did. He did NOT repeal any of Elohims instruction. He, Yeshua even stated specifically that He came not to do away with the Law (instruction of God) and that not one jot or tittle would pass from it. Please do your research. There are reasons that our Heavenly Father has given us rules to live by, “That we may have life and have that life more abundantly”. Shalom!

      • Learning by his will Good reply and thanks

      • Romans 14:14-18 Jesus told the crowd to come here and understand. It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart…Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you.

        • In other words its what you feel. If you feel like a sinner then you are. Everyone has there own journey and should be true to their self. Then you are true to God

        • Peter David Silway

Jesus was speaking of heart. What you eat will not defile the heart but it will surely defile your stomach and you need to go to the doctor for it.

          • Peter David Silway.

Jesus still kept the law,and I dont believe he would have eaten anything that was unclean. We never read that Jesus partook of pigs or crabs, but we surely read him partaking fish. Moreover He never said “that Unclean food which goeth into the mouth doesn’t defile a man.”(Mt.15:11).Again he was speaking of their traditions versus the bible law.He was speaking on washing of hands, which ws a law made by the religious leaders.

        • So are you saying that it is ok to eat a dog or cat or rat and it will not harm us, these are ail four footed beast of the earth that some ppl consider to be food

    • Can you tell me what where Does it say that.
      What book, chpt, and verse..

    • Even though the unclean foods in the old testament are no longer seen as unclean, would you still want to continue to consume them knowing what they eat? From a health standpoint, eating something that is designed to clean up waste doesn’t sound too pleasing. As we age, we start to feel worse and worse. Some people see that as normal and come with the territory of aging. But, perhaps it has to do with our diets. Your body is a temple. If you put bad in, how do you expect good to come out?

      • Sure I will. The best food isn’t for people who follow the Old Law. Lobster surpasses steak by a long shot. We wrap bacon around the best beef for added flavor. This is all a secret hidden until now!

    • Sorry but Jesus certainly did not REPEAL but fulfilled the law. If one wants to live by the law, it is good, providing he/she keeps the whole law – all of the law. The law is God’s perfect way to show that no human is good enough to keep it and please God. Thus, we need God’s grace to please God. God is pleased when we allow Him to save us from condemnation. So Jesus kept the law – the only one that could (because He was without sin). Now, instead of having to keep God’s good law to please Him, one can have faith in God by believing in Jesus, the only law-keeper, as God’s provision for salvation. This same faith one puts in God for eternal life is the same we put in believing that we can eat meats that God said we can eat, praying in faith that He has made it clean. Having enough faith to eat pork, for example, is not salvation but it proves our level of faith to man and angels, and before God.
I, for one, admit that I do not have enough faith to easily eat pork. But I’m working on it.

    • We see the Messiah say this in Matthew:

22:34 But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together.
22:35 One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him,
22:36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
22:38 This is the great and foremost commandment.
22:39 The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’
22:40 On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

Notice that the last verse lets us know that the WHOLE LAW (instructions) and the Prophets are summed up in the 2 great commandments. Removing pieces of either just hollows out the 2 leaving them with no meaning.

    • William.
Jesus came too give meaning to the laws good gave Moses..Jesus focuses on the spirit..Jesus said that it’s not what goes in your mouth, but it’s what comes
out of your mouth that counts. What comes out of your mouth comes from the heart. What you eat passes through your body and comes out of you..of course food should be cooked.

  3. Amen! I’m sure glad I’m Christian so I can enjoy pork and shellfish and anything else that suits my fancy, like fat. Had I been a Jew I would have been in the Levite tribe. So I could have the good stuff. Lol.

    • I’m a Jew by faith. Where does that leave me? I’m not of the levite tribe either. I’m getting used to this kind of hatred and relegating to the back burner for my people. It’s tragic that Folks that call themselves Christian still think like this. I wonder where this kind of thinking leaves Jesus. He, after all, was a Jew and observed the law…not did away with the law[10 Commandments] on death and resurrection. He was asked what laws we should keep in the New Testament. I will leave that up to you to look up and prove me wrong… God bless

      • Yes, The laws of Moses and temple laws were done away with but not the Ten Commandments. They are found in the New Testament…

        • Honest question for you here.

The Qu’ran makes provisions for the eating of those foods deemed unclean or improperly prepared as per the Halal code when it is a matter of survival. Do Judaic dietary rules have a similar caveat or is one “stained” in a religious sense if they violate them?

      • The dietary laws found in the OT in dealing with “unclean animals” was indeed changed by Jehovah himself when he spoke to Peter in Acts 10:9-15. I do not condone others abusive or glib comments as such are not reflective of God’s love which was lived out in flesh by his own son Jesus. I dont know if you are Orthodox or Messianic, but as a brother love you all the same. May He bless you and keep you.

        • I agree with you understanding of the scriptures, I am Messianic by faith. I use the dietary laws to stay away from the unclean things to have a healthy lifestyle and it works well. Unfortunately so many folks think they should do whatever they want to, which is their choice, but their health may suffer accordingly. I don’t keep the old laws just to keep them under the law. God Bless you brother

        • Hello, I have a disagreement with your interpretation of Acts 10:9-16 God was telling Peter not to call Men unclean. If you read further to verse 28 Peter explains what the vision meant. Peace in Christ

      • I did’t mean to sound insensitive. I’m just proud I have freedom through Christ, Old Nam Vet.

      • Peter David Silway

There are only two laws given in the New testament by Jesus which fulfills all the law and the prophets.Love God and love your neighbor as you love yourself.(Mt.22:40).

  4. Dietary ‘laws” weren’t laws until Moses. But even Noah knew that there were animals you ate and animals you didn’t. There’s a big difference between following it out of legality, and just realizing that God only designed some of the animals to be eaten. Its rather funny that many of the people who are so against eating “clean meat” would also never want to eat a fried vulture because it is nasty.

  5. Excellent article. When I discuss ‘unclean meats’ with folks I usually preface it by immediately kicking the religious aspect to the curb. The author explains in detail why humans should not consume ‘unclean meats” and seemed more intent on offering practical reasons, not religious dogma.

Speaking of religion, I’m a graduate of a fundamentalist Bible college. One thing they taught was that when reading the Bible, one should always be careful of the context. I challenge anyone, reading the New Testament IN CONTEXT, to prove that the dietary laws were abolished for Christians. Yes, I know all the verses that folks point to and yes, I know what most pastors teach (remember where I said I went to school). But taken in proper CONTEXT those passage generally refer to meat offered to idols, not ‘unclean’ meat. Don’t believe me? Go back and read those passages again with an open mind and an eye on the actual context.

Pork ribs are one of my favorite foods, but once I understood the context of Scripture and, more importantly, the reasons behind the prohibitions of unclean meat, I discontinued eating ribs. I’m not preaching or suggesting anyone else follow my lead. Eat what you want. It’s been my experience, in any event, that most Christians do what they want and then try to justify it by taking Scripture out of context. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

The one forbidden meat I never understood was the hare (rabbit). Nutritious white meat with good protein. Why is it unclean? Turns out rabbits have underdeveloped digestive systems. When they retire to their burrows at night to avoid predators they eat their body waste to further ‘process’ it. Go figure!

    • Very true. I live in a small city in Wisconsin and see Rabbits doing just what you say, eating their own waste. I found some dogs do similar things just not sure if their systems are the same…

    • Trying to live on rabbit will kill you. They have no fat, and fat is a necessary part of the diet, essential to many processes, including mental functioning. It is also necessary to process several nutrients. In an era where people had no understanding of nutrition, there is some sense in banning rabbit, just as the other bans made sense in an era when processing them for eating would have been difficult to do safely. Despite your very contrived reasonings as to what the various animals eat, etc, safety would most likely have been the main reason for such food laws.
We kept a pig last summer. On pasture, so she ate plants and grubs, some grain, and most of our leftovers–a very clean diet. And she is very tasty this winter.

      • Hopefully your pastured swine did not pick up worms from eating mice or rats. Can’t out think the wise words of the Father.

    • That’s gross. I had no clue about that with rabbits! I don’t think I’ve ever had it either. I do like deer meat though! Have you had black buck chili? I made it and it was delicious!

  6. There is a major difference between “repealed” and “fulfilled”. No! Yeshua did not repeal any of the covenant terms and conditions. His appearance to Israel fulfilled what was prophesied about his coming in the law and the prophets, as He himself said.

So you think you are, as you humbly state, “well versed in your bible.” Well, my friend you truly are deceived. Re-read Jeremiah 31:31-33. Read exactly what the New Covenant is; it is the Old Covenant re-established in the hearts of men, rather than tablets of stone. The terms and conditions are the same.

However, if you wish to twist the Scriptures to consume a pork-laden diet, have at it! It might just be detrimental to your spiritual well-being, as well as your physical health.

You might want to check into this condition, it is far more prevalent than the media advertises.

  7. To those without understanding the whole principles of the Bible refering to this page…

    Acts 10:9-16

These verses are often touted as “proof” that God’s law concerning clean and unclean animals have been abolished. However, in the final analysis, this passage is not even about clean and unclean meats!

In Peter’s vision, a huge sheet full of unclean animals is lowered from heaven, and a voice says, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” However, without hesitation Peter replies, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean” (verse 14). The Voice then responds, “What God has cleansed you must not call common” (verse 15).

First, what is the subject of Acts 10? It is evident from a thorough reading of the chapter that it is entirely devoted to the conversion of Cornelius, a Roman centurion (verse 1), the first Gentile baptized into God’s church. Peter’s vision must be understood against this background to be understood correctly.

Second, it is apparent that Peter himself does not at first understand what his vision meant (verse 17); he certainly does not jump to the conclusion that all meats are now clean. While he is pondering it, a delegation from Cornelius arrives and requests that he travel with them to Caesarea to speak to the centurion. God tells the apostle directly to go with the men, “for I have sent them” (verse 20). Obviously, God was orchestrating the whole affair.

Third, if unclean meats had been approved, would Peter have not understood this from what he had learned from Jesus? He lived with his Savior for over three years. If anyone knew that the law of clean and unclean meats had been abolished by Christ’s sacrificial death, it would have been Peter, but at this point, a decade later, he is operating under no such notion.

Fourth, his reply to the Voice, which Peter identifies as the Lord’s, is quite confident, even vehement: “Not so, Lord!” In our colloquial English, this is equivalent to “No way!” This was a command that the apostle knew went against everything he knew about God’s law. Even though the Voice repeats the command twice more (verse 16), Peter never changes his mind!

Fifth, within the context, Peter himself reveals what the vision meant. To those assembled in Cornelius’ house, he says, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean” (verse 28). The vision of unclean animals was merely an illustration God used to help Peter understand that salvation was open to those previously held at arm’s length (see Acts 11:18). This is further evidenced by the Holy Spirit being poured out visibly on these Gentiles (Acts 10:44-47). Neither Peter nor Luke, the author of Acts, makes any further commentary regarding clean or unclean foods, as the vision had served a greater purpose.

Lastly, nowhere in the context is it ever said that God had cleansed unclean meats—this is something assumed by readers with a predisposition against this statute regulating what we should eat. As Paul says, “The carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be” (Romans 8:7). Acts 10:1—11:18 confirms that “what God has cleansed” is the Gentiles, not unclean foods.

    • Dave, you have obviously studied to “show thyself approved”. Great job!

I am a Christian and it always amazes me how so many gather at Easter (and I won’t get into…hu-hum… “Holidays”) and eat ham. We’re supposedly celebrating Jesus’ (who was born a Jew) resurrection. Go figure.

    • Paul also said pretty clearly:

“…for if there had been a Law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the Law. But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the Law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the Law was our tutor to bring us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor,” (Galatians 3:21–24).

  8. This article made me crave bacon, and generally any other “unclean meat” which tastes absolutely delicious. I’m think I’m going to go eat some pig slathered in lobster sauce. Wait, does this mean all of the ham served at the last church potluck was cursed??? Anyways, I love it when people pick and choose scripture to suit their needs, and I also love getting preached at from the interwebs pulpit. Now, where did I put that glass of bacon juice…I’m thirsty. Check that log in your own eye before replying.

    • Go right ahead, have a big glass of bacon juice, or pig slathered in lobster sauce! You reap what you sow, and you are responsible for your own destiny both in this world and the next. Have at it, no one is here to cast pearls before swine. Erm… as it were.

      • So what you are saying is, there is no way possible God fearing Christians can enjoy bacon or any other of the delicious beasts on your “dirty little creature” list and still be welcome into the Kingdom of God? I just want to make sure that’s what I’m reading from all of you perfect Christians who have zero sin in your life (not that eating bacon is a sin btw).

So many believe their interpretation of the scripture is the only interpretation which is relevant and are quick to site passages which supposedly back up their claims. I for one do not take myself that seriously, and secondly always make sure to thank God for providing my meals (especially ones loaded with BACON).

You guys are reminiscent of the pharisees if I don’t say so myself. Good luck with all that.

        • Personally, I’d worry more about the attitude than the bacon. I indulge, occasionally, and do not feel condemned. But when my heart is not right, I ask Him for help as soon as I realize I’m missing the mark a.k.a. one or more of the 10 commandments that are written on my heart.

        • Isaiah 66 17 says the Father will not believe your argument when you are judged. No matter how much ham you have at church.

        • @Bacon: “KNOWING” Jesus, the Father, the Holy Spirit is a desire to learn His ways, even if it hurts in these times of self-absorption/anything goes/do it if it feels good, or in your case tastes good.

As we come to “know”, we are challenged to follow the one, true, God. Love is sacrifice=what Jesus was sent to do bc He loved his Father’s creation.

Jesus has mercy; Jesus will be the Judge; we will be judged based on our souls- our “heart” for the Almighty, our thoughts, words, what we have done good/bad, what we have failed to do bc we didn’t want to, due to other desires, or didn’t feel we had the time, and those INTENTIONS for everything listed above.

Are our intentions to follow CHRIST to the best of our ability? Some people are truly ignorant to things of God; & only He knows their souls.

However, for those of us who are searching to please God by understanding his scripture in context, and/or what he meant through His allegory-just what David explained in his paragraph, started with “Lastly,…”

The closest you can get to CHRIST through His WORD, without pre-conceived notions, opening yourself, in prayer, to the Spirit of God before reading; and being that it was written/handed down by the experiences of the Apostles (as David mentions how Peter lived with Jesus for 3 yrs, tells a great deal of how all was carried out, even historically in other early writings) and early Christians themselves.

Bacon, when we feel we need to “attack” others about our faith, it is not from God. Jesus showed us, when others didn’t believe what he preached, He either said what was the Truth, without attacking; or, remained silent. If we also did this, how much more peace there would be, & more credibility to the faith in CHRIST- bc unfortunately, many Christians “react” as well. No one is perfect, we all have our issues, but we need to be able to see our issues and actually work on them.
Godspeed & Peace growing as a Christian in our Lord. Just like it’s said, “He isn’t done with me yet!”

        • Food for thought

These are God’s ideas and what we as humans take away from up to us. Knowledge is power as the saying goes. We do have enough infections and diseases without all these scavengers in out blood stream. Yes the things which are not good for taste delicious. But to eat ocean creatures which feed off dead fish and poisons is not very smart. Look around you and the cancers and blood infections people contract each and everyday. When you do a study of things which make a total sense..why poison yourself!? Pancreatic cancers, bowel and stomach.. cancers speak volumes. Your call right?

    • It’s not about judging. It’s about understanding what God really wants from us and that is obedience; and to do it out of love and with a sincere heart.

      • @Alba: Well, it is definitely about God judging us; not us, judging others.
What you wrote: “It’s about understanding what God really wants from us and that is obedience; and to do it out of love and with a sincere heart.”

OBEDIENCE is the key. It has been since the beginning of our first parents in this world we now live. Obedience IS sacrifice, which IS love.

In these times, it’s even hard to show love to our significant other, spouses, children, neighbors. Because it means we have to GIVE OF OURSELVES. SACRIFICE. Sometimes we “don’t feel like it; not up to it”; desire what WE want, selfishness, not selflessness.

        What are our intentions?
Do we draw on the graces of our Lord to give us the strength or perseverance to do something, whether short-lived or long-term?
Doing that makes life so much easier. Negativism is always a drag. Some people are so used to being negative in what they say, do, think that it’s a comfortable place for them. Sometimes it’s an “unreadiness” to let go and “let God”. Where there is true TRUST in GOD, there is peace, whatever the outcome. If it’s what you think is a “bad” outcome, ride it out and see what the Lord may be telling/teaching/showing you, to grow more into His graces.

    • It is not a sin to eat those forbidden meats and in fact if one simply eats anything, one might go to heaven faster than expect. It is merely for health reason.

    • I use beef bacon in cooking

  9. There you have it, it’s in the bible god said it, Jess demands it, if you are Christian and follow the bible you can’t pic and choose,

  10. Dave! good understanding on Acts 10:9.

Pig meat is absolutely loaded with parasites and toxins. ALL pig meat regardless of source. If in fact The Almighty had permitted the eating of swine flesh, wouldn’t he have removed the parasites? He didn’t remove them, and in fact states that eating it is an abomination. Isaiah 66:17 is referring to “end times.”

The fastest track to clogged arteries and congestive heart failure is the regular consumption of pork. Parasites in the brain from the trichina worm is far more common than reported. Here is a link to a fox news report from several years ago that shows pork worm in the brain of a young mother. It shows the neurosurgeon removing a pork “maggot” from her brain. Scary!

The following is a short excerpt from the book entitled “On Health and Holiness”, by Hezekiah Haas.

Trichina is just one of 19 worms found in pigs.

“Trichinosis, a parasitic infestation resulting from eating pig meat, is estimated at 150,000 cases in the USA each year. Many cases are serious. In some cases, trichinae spreads through the body, even into the brain. When this occurs, victims may experience unusual drowsiness, clouded consciousness, convulsive seizures, weakness, and in some cases, paralysis or coma. The Journal of the American Association points out that even smoked pork sausage can contain live trichanae cysts.”

I certainly am no-one to judge anybody else’ in their consumption of pork, however, The Scripture absolutely does not support their decision to do so.

    • Citing health reasons now are we? I wonder how many anti-porkers can run a 6 minute mile or 5 miles in under 40 minutes. I’m 40 years old and pass my yearly physicals with flying colors, next week I’m going for a personal record of 365 in bench press….this weekend I’ll probably throw on my 75lb backpack and hike for 10 to 15 miles.

I attribute all of my health to being blessed with awesome genetics, blessed with good health, and a large amount of critters in my diet.

For those of you who state the scripture does not support the consumption of pork, there are no doubt loads of respected and tenured pastors or even professors of scripture who will call you crazy. I’m no pastor but I’ll call you crazy too, and think your opinion matters just about as much as the next guy who thinks his/her interpretation of the bible is the only one that matters. At the end of the day I answer to ONE Being and He does not reside on this earth.

      • Giving scripts to you did not work might as well try something else. To save you from the poo eaters. Isaiah 66 17 If you pastor is telling you pork is of he is the road to ruin.

      • @Bacon: Sure, you can be healthy; either for now, or maybe the rest of your life; however, what I believe I can say, we all are really talking about is your spiritual health.

      • @Bacon

I am a little late to join the party but couldn’t help replying to your post.

It seems as though you have not been blessed with awesome genetics for a brain and all the bacon you have been eating has turned you into a meat head!

Shame on me for busting your “pork-chops,” but maybe you should pray that your shoulder doesnt blow out the next time you bench press.

Once you’re eyes are open and you are not blinded anymore, maybe then you will use your strength to change your diet.

  11. What category do catfish fall into? They have fins, yet they are a scavenger fish that eat the rotting remains of other fish along with the live prey that they can catch. Tilapia have scales and their primary diet is eating the poop of other fish. That’s why fish farms have been raising tilapia and selling them along with the other fish they are raising. They serve the purpose of cleaning the tank of other fishes waste without having to feed them fish food and then they can be sold for profit as well. I think if most people knew that about tilapia they wouldn’t eat them. I know I stopped eating them after I found that out. So confusing???? Mainly I’m curious about catfish because they are a pretty big part of our diet down here in the south.

    • The dietary rules for fish are that they have to have both fins and scales. Catfish have fins but NO scales. They are bottom feeders and grow quite large scavenging near the bottom of damns.

    • I never knew this and thanks for the information. How strange this is, didn’t they nickname Talapia as the “JESUS” fish?

I would like to point out that the law is the law, for it is a “Holy” thing. Jesus said I have not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. Now, everyone of us are guilty of breaking the law. Even if we observed the law since birth, we are still born into sin, due to the sins of our forefathers! The belief in JESUS as G-Ds only Son who came to take away all of the Sins of the entire world from the past, the present and the future. Also to believe of his death and resurrection 3 days latter. The Father raised him because, he was without sin and death could not keep him. Believe this with your heart and confess this with you lips and you will be held blameless and be slave to sin, no more. Salvation is a “Gift” the most precious in all of creation! It is not earned by works and is not earned by faith alone. It is by the “Grace” of G-D through faith in him! Jesus said “What a man puts into his body, does not make him sin, but what proceeds out of his mouth! Now does this mean that we should just ignore the law? Paul said “may it never be so”. However Paul was educated at to what these laws were and taught to uphold them and since he was born of the Jewsish faith. He was held to those laws being a bondservant in the flesh of the Lords! If you truly believe that what you are doing will cause you to sin, don’t do it! If you know of a person who eats pork but does everything that the lord commands and otherwise is righteous in all else, yet your condemnation of his eating pork causes him to stumble and sin. Then Woe to you! If you truly love your brother and know he errs and he is unaware. Pray for wisdom on how to approach him, yet do it with patience, forgiveness, grace and love! Perhaps if we all did this, including me. We could overcome stumbling blocks and unite as one in Christ!

  12. Did you know that in the Bible, animals that are considered ‘unclean’ were not to be sacrificed in the sacrificial system to God? Only animals that were classified as clean were to be sacrificed to God.

The Creator of heaven and earth knows what’s healthy to eat and what’s not. Take these verses in the New Testament that people use as an excuse to eat anything they want. The majority of ‘Christians’ misunderstand 1 Timothy 4:4,5.

The New Testament says, “For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.” 1Timothy 4:4,5.

What do these verses mean? Animals to be used as food is sanctified (set apart as holy) by two (2) things: 1. The Word of God (God lets us know in the Bible what’s healthy and what’s not) and 2. prayer.

    • Yup, key word ” sanctified” by the word. Further the bible you can not consecrate or purify the unclean. “Those who sanctify themselves and purify themselves [to go] to the gardens, behind one in the midst, eating pig’s flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, they shall come to an end together,” says Yahweh. Isaiah 66 17

  13. ……. you may be right,…… I may be crazy,…… but I just might be that lunatic that………….won’t have pork maggots eating away at my brain. I suppose it only becomes a “salvation” issue if you end up having your skull sawed open on the operating table. I just don’t care to roll the dice.

As for all these “tenured pastors” that may label me crazy, I believe the Scriptures refer to them as “hirelings. 🙂

I respect your opinion and your stance on the issue, as far as I’m concerned both the article and the comments are interesting. Certainly not a reason to point fingers in condemnation.

We all will give an account of ourselves before the Creator, and we will not be able to point our fingers at the hirelings either.

    Be well and blessed.

  14. Consumption of Clean vs Scavengers. Would you rather rinse off then eat a filet that was drug across the floor of a ‘hay wagon’ or a ‘garbage truck’, drug thru a ‘water barrel’ or a septic tank’? Obviously the health risks would depend on how the ‘container’ was used and obvious that greater risk is thru exposure to the ‘clean up container’. IMO, the ‘dietary laws’ are warnings NOT commandments.

  15. I love bacon! Lobster too, but I had crabs once and didn’t enjoy the feeling one bit. God bless.

  16. Lol, my gods have a pig of perpetual pork. Wild boar and even feral pig are great sources of nutrition. It is man that makes pig unclean. They don’t have to be. But hey, if you midEast wannabes don’t wanna honor your actual Ancestors, I’m good good with that(though it perplexes me). More for us tru to our Folk.

  17. mississippigirl

I think God is more concerned what goes into our hearts and minds (and comes out as well), than He is about the type of foods that we eat. I live under grace, not law, and I won’t be subjected to a pharisaical rod to the hand because I choose to eat bacon. The holiness that God demands of us is more than the rules and regulations that we follow, it’s a condition of the heart. Have we learned nothing from Jesus’s teachings the last 2,000 years? For those who are led to include dietary restrictions in their walk with God, then that is what you need to do–but not all of us are led that way. That is what is wonderful about the family of God. We are not alike, yet we each add a richness to the whole. Be careful about becoming Pharisees over things that ultimately don’t really matter while at the same time, allowing your heart to harden toward your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

  18. I have never heard such HOG-WASH in my life….Translations of the bible such as these is what drove me from the church….These quotes are from the old testament, which is Jewish in nature and God where most terrible and full of revenge to the Jews. Oh course they didn’t eat pig, They lacked a way to cure it, They lived a dang desert…Baffoon…… Yer drawing from the Old Testament and whitewashing it with the New Testament and hoping you got it right. The Bible is pieced together from the Dead Sea Scrolls which the church clergy has selected certain parts not to clash with what had been taught up to that point. And don’t go quoting Jesus to unless it’s from the original version of the Book of Thomas. I’m done with this site, I think THAT would be BEST for all parties involved….This is why I can’t push the, ” I Believe ” button….Blind Faith contrary to Reason..Ciao

  19. As usual this scientific article is attacked on religious grounds. The idea being shared is that God had good reasons for condemning these food sources other than just to say don’t eat them. Now even though we are set free from the Law of Moses, we are also free to apply common sense and investigation into what we should eat and not eat.
For example as a Christian I am free to eat GMO foods, but scientific studies have shown I will get cancer and or tumors if I do. So While I am free to eat them I am not free from the effects of such abominations of creation.

  20. Letting fairy tales and mythology dictate your diet? What’ll they think up next!

  21. God didn’t write any dietary laws.people did.perhaps they had their reasons, but to say this is from a God is a little silly…

  22. However to most Christians, these dietary laws are in the old testament, thus belonging to the old ways and most Christians do not abide by these old, laws, because their belief is that when Jesus died, he then wiped away the old laws, except a few, that Christians deem worthy. This is their argument I have had plenty an argument, with said family Christians. Lol. I still have not received a logical, answer to why there are so many different Nationality backgrounds, if we were to be descendants of one family that hitched a ride on an ark, Still waiting. Lol

  23. Always enjoy these lively discussions. Context is important here. While I’m not a fan of any revealed interpretation; you have to be able to understand context. Context was mentioned before but not in the same scope or scale.

Imagine being living in an extended family situation, in Alaska, where you herded goats and cattle. You lived at least three hours from even the most basic of medical support and it takes much effort to get there. You, for all intents and purposes, are self sustaining and must be able to handle situations.

Does it really need to be said that prevention of illness is the way to go?

Health was considered a gift from God; illness the symptom of the lack of that love. Science has proven why these foods were perhaps unwise to eat in less than perfect conditions on a regular basis. Greater acumen; better understanding and perhaps greater wisdom.

So – in that context – it really wasn’t a great idea to expose your tribe/clan/family to something that would potentially wipe your seed from the earth. These aren’t just for Hebrews, in fact dietary laws were prevalent in the church for centuries. Its sad to see any faithbaiting… remember Christians are just Jews who believe the second coming already happened. All are cousins in the Abrahamic faith. Please remember these items in CONTEXT. Does it need to be said that perhaps what was needed, and by needed I mean to avoid death, in the desert of antiquity might not be needed now?

I believe the author has an interesting thread of thought that should be the actual focus of the discussion: Does a long term Off-Grid situation lend to the following of Biblical dietary recommendations?

How many people would be effective at creating ovens/stoves that ensure the proper preparation of foods? Feeding your group unclean food is the quickest way of ending that adventure. How different would the experience be by a group of modern – post game changing event – survivors from the nomadic herders of the Old Testament? I’d wager not that different. Our understandings would be greater, out skills less applicable.

Lets steer the conversation to something productive! Your personal belief in the word of God is that. Be proud of it. Your questioning of the meaning of the Bible and what is really out there is just that – your personal belief. Be proud of that too. Lets see what can be learned from those that came before – concentrate on the message and not so much the paper or the binding that its delivered on.

    Just my observations….

    • Christians do not believe that the second coming has already happened. We believe Jesus was/is the messiah and in general Jews do not unless they are a messianic jewelry (don’t know of I spelled that correctly)

  24. I’ve been reframing from eating pork the last year or two. But I caved in a week ago and bought some pork steaks. I ask a church goer last week to find where in the bible that says otherwise. This article answers my question. But I’d like to know if bear, lion is of the unclean meats. I know people bear hunt so if it is unclean I’d like to know….

  25. HOW COME GOD TOLD Noah I give to you all the animal even as the green herb to EAT???

    • Nosh knew what animals where clean and unclean, hence he took the clean animals seven by seven and the unclean in pairs.

  26. Its ironic, that Muslims who believe, live by and share these same beliefs & laws are said to be crazy because of religious & political differences.

It’s also a well known fact that many creatures were put here to regulate other creatures in support of the lives man.

One event in support is that the European plague was the result of superstition. Europeans thought cats were “bad luck” and did away with them. Without cats, the rats took over and along with poor hygienic practices — walla — we have a PLAGUE! It is said that 25% of the population of that continent was wiped out due to superstition or a miscalculation of reality.

Ancient Egyptians loved and worshiped cats. Cats kept their food supply free of rodents which thrive on dirt and disease. Who knew?? And there was no plague.

Besides being against the “LAW”, the pig, certain other animals and many crustations are extremely acidic and the body (save for the stomach) is designed to be alkaline.

I completely agree with this article.

  27. These guidelines are ludicrous, and asserting their correctness under the banner of a deity is equally crazy. While there is some truth behind the adverse health effects of consuming certain fauna, most of the evidence in the article is augmented to fit the narrative provided by religious texts. If these texts are to be believed why do they fails to mention recently discoveries such as the cancer causing nature of red meat within the body or the inflammatory properties of milk? If God create a dynamic ever changing world why would he leave us a static book, and if he spoke to is directly in the past where is his presence today. These all questions that should be asked long before interpreting the “word ” of God. We cannot rely on the teaching of antiquity to guide us into the future.

  28. Matthew 15:10-12

10After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, “Hear and understand. 11″It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.” 12Then the disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?”…

Ask yourself what was a Pharisees from most of the post God is not of confusion

    1Timothy 4:3-5

…3men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. 4For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; 5for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.

We pray over our food to give thanks and also that it will not cause harm to us.
This topic of clean food was given to the levi people to sanctify themselves before the Arc there was no proper was of cooking and storage which caused death, ones diet even now some can not take in to much salt and etc. which is evil to their temple.

    • “Sanctified” by the Word. Unclean foods are not sanctified by the word they are called abominable. You can not consecrate the unclean Isaiah 66 17.

  29. ~~ The followers of Yeshua (Jesus) kept the laws including those of food ~~

    Ratton (1915) states:
The early church at Jerusalem, retained most of the distinctive customs of the Jews, such as circumcision, kosher meats, the Jewish Sabbath, the Jewish rites, and the worship of the Temple. Our Lord, Himself, lived the exterior life of a Jew, even so far as the observance of Jewish religious customs was concerned. The early Church of Jerusalem followed His example. The Jews looked upon the Hebrew Christians in Jerusalem simply as a Jewish sect, which they called the sect of the Nazarenes. Tertullus, pleading before Felix, the Governor, described S. Paul as “the author of the sedition of the sect of the Nazarenes” (Acts 24:5). S. John was a leader of the Nazarenes. He is said by Polycrates to have worn the pe,ta/lon or sacerdotal headpiece of a high priest. It was a plate of the finest gold having engraved on it, “The Holy of Yehovah” (Exodus 39:29). This shows his position in the Nazarene Church, and the Jewish complexion of that Church. (p. 4)

Lopes (1997) states that the Catholic Church abolished God’s laws:
    13. ELEUTHERIUS, ST. (175-189) Born at Nicopolis in Epirus, he was a disciple of Pope Anicetus…He dispensed with the obligations of Christians to follow several dietary laws of Judaic origin. (p. 5)

  30. Long ago I turned my back on such arguments… What a waste of time. Who cares what happened 3000 years ago, especially when most people can’t speak intelligently to what happened 100 years ago, or ten years ago, or even yesterday. Toss those books – all those books – in the trash heap, and stick to quotes and generic proverbs.

  31. Thank you SO much for this article! Being a Believer in Jesus Christ for nearly forty years and going to Bible School I always wondered why the contradictory teachings. A few years ago I came to God with a humble hungry heart after about twenty years of very trying painful times, asking Him to show me why, if an All-Powerful, amazing God resides in me, did I still struggle with things like bitterness and unforgiveness. There should have been a vast difference between me and those who did not choose to accept Christ in their lives. Oh, sure….I didn’t live like the world did, but what about the attitudes of the heart and why didn’t I love people like Jesus did…I knew something was amiss.
Well, God in His amazing love answered me. It took a few years to get the full answer and there is still more to learn, I ‘m sure

    • I would love to learn the change brought in your life,
we simply live just because exist, with no aim to do any thing more then wht is called for

      May you be blessed

  32. …but learning just how MUCH paganism has infiltrated the Church really woke me up and now I seek to follow God in the way He had always intended. I have learned how the traditions of men have become more important to those who call themselves Christians than God’s ways. I have since stopped celebrating pagan holidays like “Christmas” and Easter, etc….am seeing how totally far we’ve come (in a bad way) from where God intended for His followers to be and am delighted that He is answering my questions as I cried out to Him. Now I see why Christians in many cases don’t seem much different than unbelievers. When we get Babylon out of our lives then there is room for Christ to pour in and transform us.
Curious? I’ve found Truth or Tradition Should Christians Celebrate Christmas on YouTube to be a tremendous help.
Also look up Rob Skiba and Babylon Rising. I hope these help. God Bless those who seek the truth and run hard after Him….He will not disappoint.

  33. Eating unclean food does not affect your standing in Salvation but it does affect your body which will show you the signs sooner or later and that might subtract years from your life/cause you cancer/parasitic infections/infertility etc etc. God is showing us that by choosing to eat clean foods we can live longer on the earth and have the full functional benefit of our bodies. My people perish for lack of knowledge – remember? What knowledge you ask. The knowledge given freely in God’s infallible word.

  34. I really enjoyed this article and comments. I am writing from Nigeria. One day I was bored i opened my bible and actually read it. I freaked out because most of what i read was in complete contradiction with what we were being taught in the churches. I flipped back to the old testament, there i read about God the creator, how he loves humans but humans do not return the love, so he sought to change them, clean them up , giving laws and guidelines.
Truth is most people are actually practicing atheists, they just do the whole religion thing out of habit, culture and convenience

  35. 1Timothy 4:3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
1Timothy4:4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
1Timothy 4:5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

  36. 1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
    1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
1Ti 4:3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
1Ti 4:4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
1Ti 4:5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

  37. The truth to the matter is ppl God never said we can eat it, in doing so it’s makes u unclean when he wants us holy….YES UR FREE WILL CHOICE 2 CONSUME BC WE ARE ALL GONNA B JUDGE BY WHAT WE DO…ITS NOT PLEASING TO HIM…..UR LIFE WHERE DO U WANT SPENS ETERNITY

  38. So, uh, how the heck are pigs and seafood unclean yet a bug (locust) is not?

    • Steve: Here is an article that may help in understanding what is meant by clean (fit to eat)and unclean (not fit to eat) - peace

  39. A pearl comes from an oyster. An oyster has neither fins or scales it is an abomination . Jesus heaters would of been shocked at the statement. Throwing your peals before swine. Because a pearl was an abomination like swine. The gates of the new jerusaleum are made ofboearl. There us neither Jew or gentile. Those k as wete made to separate jews and gentiles with a wall. If you really want to study the law you need to do a better job then you ate doing. If pork ever touched a grill you have to trash the grill. You could never eat at a restraunt. People I know that I know that have hot involved in this lost all there peace and joy and really suffered a non productive and fruitless life.

  40. You cannot walk in God’s path and at the same time, sustain your existence by murdering the innocent and consuming and swallowing them. Life is a complicated miracle and it took Billions of years to evolve. Life is gifted to all of God’s creatures with which we are only one. To know God, one has to do all that is possible not to harm any living being that can suffer. The breath of life is sacred and beautiful. You can quote all the scriptures you want, but spiritual ascension and understanding will always be at arms length until you stop being cruel and inflicting pain on others including those that hold a different species title. You are using the Bible as an excuse to cause pain and murder. It is wrong.
Pythagoras (570-490 BC) – For as long as man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings, he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.

“Violence begins with the fork” Mohandas Gandhi

“The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.” ~ Leonardo Da Vinci

“There is no fundamental difference between man and animals in their ability to feel pleasure and pain, happiness, and misery.” ~ Charles Darwin

“I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.” ~ Mohandas Gandhi

“I choose not to make a graveyard of my body for the rotting corpses of dead animals.” ~ George Bernard Shaw

The Dalai Lama (1935-present) – I do not see any reason why animals should be slaughtered to serve as human diet when there are so many substitutes. After all, man can live without meat. It is only some carnivorous animals that have to subsist on flesh. Killing animals for sport, for pleasure, for adventures, and for hides and furs is a phenomenon which is at once disgusting and distressing. There is no justification in indulging in such acts of brutality . . . Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to a man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not to die, so do other creatures.

  41. Some of you people are fools. GOD never made a single thing without a purpose. And no ritual or sacrifice could or would alter that purpose. If He made a law against something, than it would still apply unless He specifically stated otherwise. WHich never happened. Proof?? Science today proves that unclean still means unclean. If something was bad for us thousands of years ago, it still is bad for us. If you have complete faith and trust in TRUTH, then you will agree. WHy would anyone not care to take care of the body and mind that GOD gave us? Do you not desire to be in the best possible way to serve Him here? He did not give us our life to abuse it for the sake of pleasure. Society is upside down. It feeds us poison and tells us its clean. It spoils us and tell us its normal. Making us fat and lazy and selfish. No good to GOD at all. You have to make sacrifices to serve GOD. Otherwise, you are just another fool.

  42. Good grief! Religious nutbags! Eat whatever you want; just leave the rest of us alone and keep your religious garbage to yourselves.

  43. Hey, lobsters do have fins. The things on the back of their tails are fins. Crabs have swimming fins too. And shrimp too.

Things without scales or fins are star fish, urchins, sea sponges, octopus, squid just to name a few.

According to this rule its ok to eat dolphins and whales since they both have fins, also sea turtles too.

  44. I do not believe in god, but these rules actually kinda make sense. Perhaps people have been observing some dietary patterns and have put them to writing as in to warn others of possible outcomes.

  45. I believe the reason for the dietary laws in the OT were definitely for health reasons. Everything God commanded has always been for our good. If you do your homework you will find that unlike the times of Leviticus where people raised their own animals and knew what they were eating we are living in a time when most of us haven’t got a clue. You will get sick to your stomach when you read about what is being given to animals to fatten them up before slaughter. The fact that we are so opposed to pork but pay no attention to the hormones, antibiotics and adulterated grain being fed to beef and chicken not to mention the unbelievable conditions these animals are kept in is to not look at the spirit behind the reasons God did not want us to eat pork. I believe God’s people are perishing for lack of knowledge! I do believe the praying over our food is important but food has always been prayed over and He still said not to eat pork for very good reasons. I am now disgusted about beef and chicken. It is without a doubt unclean and will do your body harm at some point. I want to now know what the animals are fed that I eat. I have a family full of medical folks and they will tell you that your health is at the end of your folk. We as Christians have become so dependent on the very corrupt systems of this world. They follow the Prince of this world who is Satan. They are consumed with making money, not your good. God will provide a way for you to be healthy. He is leading me to dietary changes by changing my heart and understanding about the truth about the lack of health of many of the foods that I was consuming. More and more people are getting sick with serious diseases and the answer is not in a pill. Most of the reasons are because of our environment, the water we drink (or don’t drink enough of ) and the food we eat. Please consider that this is so much bigger than just pork!

  46. Is there Part 3 to God’s Dietary Laws? I can’t find it and would love to get it. We’re having a discussion right now at work about this.

  47. Elsje Parsons Massyn

The eating of animals came due to the fall. Man became carnal, with carnal lusts and carnal thoughts and desires. It was NEVER God’s intention that man should eat the flesh and blood of living creatures.
God’s FIRST LAW was written up in Genesis 1:29 which is vegetarian or vegan.
ALL diseases and sicknesses are connected with the eating of animal flesh, drinking the milk of other species (which are meant for their own babies which contains hormones not fit for human consumption or wellbeing) and eating the ovulating eggs of chickens.
Man is a stubborn being rebellious and self-righteous.
Rather than choosing a vegetarian lifestyle which provides a life which does not inflict harm on any creature God has made man chose carnal living and is paying the price in their bodies (sickness and dread diseases) due to that rebelliousness.
Its rediculous to think that fish does not consume and eat fish (almost ALL fish eat other fish and dead decaying flesh whether its intentional or unintentional) so if you eat fish you are consuming flesh that ate the dead flesh of other creatures.
Also no matter how much meat is Halaaled or Koshered THE BLOOD DOES NOT LEAVE THE BODY OF THE ANIMAL it remains in veins and arteries of the animal as well in the meat that is prepared and it is consumed that way. Halaal and Kosher is just a mantra religious leaders sing to themselves and teach their off-spring the same song that they will be okay if they eat Halaal and Kosher meat (God will protect them)
If that was true I wouldnt have see countless Muslim people in hospital suffering from colon cancer.
So please so called believers WAKE UP!!
The Kingdom of God is NOT meat and drink but righteousness peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Also The Kindom of God is about living a life that is worthy of God’s Kingdom ABOVE and reflecting it on earth BELOW!!

  48. I learned from your article, Susan, thank for writing it. It rings true to me on every count. God has a purpose for every one of his creatures, and this truth continues to amaze me as I think about the tiniest insects. There is no waste in God’s creation. I think some of the readers of your article are missing the point. Following God’s dietary laws is not a measure of zealousness for God, it is a matter of staying healthy (clean). Although Christians are not condemned for not following the Law of Moses in this age of grace, we will live longer, healthier lives if we do. God bless.
